In the middle of March next year. I want to get in to capture the blue hour and sunrise. Sunrise will be at 7:18 that day. i would like to be in the park by 6 or so but the gates don't open until 7.
Any ideas?
Thanks
AHA!! Ain't the internet wonderful!! Googled photographing sunrise at WSNM and found you can get a special use permit.
All is well...
Oh no!! I see it is a $50 per hour (or any fraction thereof) fee to get the permit...Well...Have to get this past the wife... Wish me luck.
Wait till 7AM just like everyone else.

And get a sunrise pic like everyone else's.
Getting in at 7 with the sunrise at 7:18 gives me very little time to get set up.
Plus, I find that the best color starts about 45 minutes or so before the actual rise. I like to be at my spot 1 hour before sunrise (which is why I do photoshoots mostly without my wife. She doesm't want to sit around for an hour or more waiting on the light).

Go earlier in the year then. Very easy.
You seem to be choosing the wrong time of year to go if this is so important.
Research sunrise times at other dates as you seem to have done for this date.
Then choose that date where the park is open.
Perhaps that will work.
Or perhaps they do not want people wandering around getting lost and hurt in the dark which is most likely thus the special permit.

White Sands is just a stop along the road. Changing dates is not an option. Also spending 3 nights at Saguaro shooting wildflowers. Then joined by wife and a friend for 10 days near Phoenix and Palm Springs.

It seems that with a two week trip planned, another $50 or so will not be a major expense.
50.00 is a deal there should be no need to ask the wife.. But be warned, you'll not be the only one there paying 50.00 so you'll still have to deal with others in or around your shot. We'd do the 50.00 thing if we were headed that way.

You've got 8 months to save $50. Your wife might allow you a few dollars a month between now and then.
I agree that the extra hour can make a big difference!

Let's see...with my allowance of $5 per week....about 31 weeks...I need $1.62 per week....leaves me $3.38 per week to spend on myself (I am VERY needy)... I need to cut back to 2 cups of coffee per week....I can do that!!

Ahhh... In my younger days, no problem.. Today my idea of camping (or roughing it) is staying at a Holiday Inn instead of a Westin.
Actually, I no longer have any camping equipment so it would be cheaper to get there 2 hours earlier than to camp.
