As far as I know, the only way to keep people from downloading your photos it to not post any.

True. If they can see the image on their screen, they are capable of downloading it. Actually, at that point it is already downloaded to the computer; it's just a matter of choosing to save it permanently to the computer or not.

Those who doubt that viewing is downloading, try the following: Open up an image posted on the internet. Now disconnect from the internet, but leave the web page with the image remaining open. As you will discover, the image is still very much visible on the screen. Which means, the image has indeed been downloaded to the computer, at least temporarily.

Not sure why you are reacting so. I had a conversation with a friend and this topic came up. I then thought I would ask for feedback. I will not respond to your hate/anger and wish you the best. Life is too short to spend any more time on this with you.

I, for one, think DrJoe's pictures are perfectly stealable. You do fine photography and you have every right to worry about your intellectual property.

Since photography is more of a hobby than my main trade (line of work), I am not deeply concerned. But, after I have investing my time, my gear and my money for that one photograph, I would not enjoy someone else reaping the rewards of my labor. There is something known as a Poor Man's Copyright. I learned about this when I started photography classes in high school. The story goes, all you must do is stick the work into an envelope and mail it to yourself through the United States Postal Service. Once it arrives back on your doorstep, keep the sealed envelope—now with the postal date stamp—in a safe place. That sealed envelope results in copyright protection. If anyone tries to steal your photograph, you can prove its yours.

Most of us would have a rooms full of envelopes if we did that, and then how would you even know which envelope contained the image that was in question about?

How do you know you're not a successful photographer until a clerk at Walmart refuses to print your images?

DrJoeS possibly what you're not understanding is that the lion's share of commercial photographers only work under contract. Deliverables, Fees, Usage (market and duration limitations), etc are negotiated, agreed upon and accepted before any work is done. The only real issues are when the terms specified in the contract are not honored...
Only then are civil actions even considered.

Yes I've had imagery "borrowed" without my consent... So what? I could care less...
I have bills to pay thus I'm totally focused on meeting and exceeding the expectations what few client I still have have left.

What concerns me here is why would a PhD psychologist broach a query with a potential of raising paranoia and thus cortisol levels DrJoeS? While you may be entitled to claim the title of "Doctor" in an academic scenario in my humble estimation you fall just a tad short of what might be expected from a Licensed Board Certified Medical Doctor. To this end I'm simply going to address you as JoeS moving forward...

So JoeS are you aware that many across our country are now living in a society that currently is under considerable duress... Meaning the sympathetic nervous system is hyperactive... Maybe engaging your UHH audience's parasympathetic nervous system might be more germane and appropriate at this juncture... How about some serene tranquil imagery from Tampa Bay, FL.

Oh, the cornerstone of paranoid schizophrenia treatment, are antipsychotic medications which are some of the most commonly prescribed drugs. They're thought to control symptoms by affecting the brain neurotransmitter dopamine. Maybe consider reviewing dissertations on the aforementioned JoeS... Albeit in a clinical scenario I've noticed that Haloperidol (Haldol) is widely deployed...

All the best on your journey JoeS...

Good ending to your story

I was nice about it. When the attorney sent me a letter, I called him and said, "Would you like to see the original negative and a proper print from it? I'll bet your client $500 I own it." I put the neg on a light table, copied it with my iPhone, then put a print on the desk, copied it, and emailed him. That was enough. He called his client, and I got a check a few days later.

When we post photos and store the original, there is a high quality digital copy out there. These can be downloaded and used by others. If we do not watermark or sign what we post, it is easy to steal good work.
Are people worried about this? Have you seen your images in places where you did not give approval, or outright theft of your work by others?
How do you deal with this?

I'd be flattered
