As some of you know I purchased a Nikon D7200 body. Topic - https://www.uglyhedgehog.com/t-702782-1.html , to upgrade from a D5100 with articulating screen.

This was the ad,
Item condition: 9+ Shows little or no signs of wear
This D7200 is in great condition. Comes with:
Nikon EN-EL15, charger, UC-E17 USB Cable, Nikon camera strap, eyepiece cap, rubber eyecup, Nikon ML-L3 Wireless Remote Control,
manual and book , Nikon D7200 for Dummies. Shutter count 9614. LCD screen cover with Afunta screen protector. One extra included.
I am selling because moving to full-frame.

SO,
I started playing with it tonight ,to get familiar with all the controls. It seems like an excellent camera. I like the way all the controls on on the back ,how easy it is to make adjustments .
It seem to take really sharp, nice pictures outdoors and did a real good job indoors in low light . I didn't get real serious with composition , But pics looked really good.

BUT , I'm already missing the articulating screen on the back . Maybe the D5600 would have been the better choice ???!? I don't see a lot of difference between the D5600 and the D7200
I was hoping I didn't miss the articulating screen .

Am I being too quick in my thoughts ? I can't get down low on my knees . I've had knee replacements, hip replacement and back surgery and stomach surgery , so the articulating screen was a nice plus . Yeah ,I was hard on my body growing up ,too many sports.

I guess I'll have to shoot it some more this weekend before I make final decision . I attached pics where I used the articulating screen ,but maybe I don't use it as much as I think I do

Thank you

I leverage the magic of digital and modern IS/VR-enabled lenses to work around cameras with no articulating screens. If I want a shot and don't want to get low to see the view finder to get it, I just figure where I need the AF point and I try a blind-shot holding the camera where I think it will be focused. It seems this is a bit easier with BBF. I check the result and just keep trying to hold the camera at the correct angle, focus and shoot until I get the desired result.

IMHO the D5600 has several advantages over the D7200 and they have identical sensors. I don’t know if you learned to control your D5100 with the info screen but the touch screen on the D5600 brings that to a new level of elegance. It is about 1/2 the weight. And back when I was getting started with the D5xxxs I tried a D7000. The randomly placed unlighted buttons defeated me. I dumped after six months.

Of course now I recommend the Z50 with the two lens kit…but you have to get in line for the f2 for articulated screen.

Show me anything that doesn't have its up side and its down side, and I'll show you something that doesn't exist. Yup, having --or not having-- an articulating back screen may impose some challenges to knee/hip/brain replacement types, but hey, there's fish to be fried and promises to keep, and when one door opens, sometimes it lets in flies.

I'll admit that now and then I miss my D5300's flippy screen, but then I have no problem with physical articulation. I (sometimes) like to get REAL low, as if to get an ant's view of something, and since trading off that 5300, my already dirty Levis often get dirtier, and me and/or my shirt sometimes acquire a cactus spine or three, but I can deal with that. But my lens choices (down to and including those lenses that wouldn't otherwise meter, communicate data, and more) have grown significantly with the use of the D7200 I likewise have, and that's more important to me. Sure, I could stick one of my macros or most of my AI/AIS/AF/G or whatever lenses on the 5300, but on the 7200, the sky (with exceptions, of course) is a lot closer to the limit.

IQ-wise? There's no difference between the two.

No focus motor in the D5600.

Nor any of Nikon’s newest models. Only matters if you have old lenses without their own motor.

There's no difference in photo quality between the two and if you like the smaller size & weight of the D5600 then by all means! The D7200 has more buttons & dials and makes it easier to get the kind of photo you want but when push comes to shove, there isn't a whole lot of difference between the two.

Very nice pictures.
I have the same problems with knees, back etc. I will often use a small portable seat and use a monopod or small tripiod to take pictures. I prefer to hand hold, but i do get tired, so the seat comes in handy. I am looking to purchase a Nikon D850 and it has a screen which moves up and down, as you discussed.

I've played with the D5600 and don't like the way it feels, it's just too lightweight in my opinion.

They are cameras for different niche/use.

If you are looking for a general purpose family/hobby camera, where you can even join the group photo and see the composition with its fully articulate screen, then the 5XXX series is for you.

If you are looking for a photographers camera(semi pro-professional), with its dedicated buttons for quick manual adjustments, dual memory card for redundancy, weather sealed body and the capability to use older lenses, the 7200 will be the better choice of the two.

Note that I do not consider this semi pro-professional use to apply on its replacement model, the D7500. That is a single card camera and by itself is not advisable for paid photography. IE weddings etc., hence on my opinion that it can not even be called a semi-pro unit.
With a limited screen articulation, the D7500 is also less flexible than the D5300 as a general purpose/hobby unit.
The D7500 is more suited for sport & BIF hobby photography than the two.

I would suggest a right angle viewer for the D7200, much cheaper than a D5600, and they work great. I have one, and love it. Easy to install, easy to remove. they work great.

I have to say that when I went looking in my pictures for examples of using the articulating screen ,I had to search thru hundreds to find 5-6 examples !! Evidently I might not really use it as much as I think I do !!

There is another way in which you can "have your cake and eat it too" and that is to remotely control your D7200 by using Nikon's WMU app on your cell phone. Set up your camera on a tripod for example to get the low down shots or whatever and use your cell phone to see what the camera is seeing. When all is as you want it, take the shot via the app.

Yes, that movable screen is nice, but will you be taking all your pictures down low? The D7200 is a very capable camera. I posted some comparisons below.

That orange car in the last shot is an English Ford Anglia. I had the four-door version, the Prefect. Nice, basic little car with 36 HP.

With the D7200 you can use your on camera flash in commander mode but I don't think that's available with the D5600 but I'm not sure. I like a camera body that has a focusing motor.
