We will be visiting the Santa Fe area in the next week and would like to know if anyone knows if the Canyon Road district will still be open this time of year. I visited their web site but saw nothing stating if it is seasonal or not. We will also be ready to take photos of interests from Santa FE to the NW corner of the state. Ruins, pueblos, Bandelier are on my list. If anyone has a great idea of a place you may have visited with nice photo opps then just chime in. Thanks!

There are also, two other old churches and the oldest house within walking distance of Christine Chapel.

I do not know about the Canyon Road deal.

The Canyon Road area is open year-round,just different levels of activity. Just walk around the old town and you'll see all kinds of photo ops! The areas mentioned are fine and certainly a good visit. One place not mentioned is Tentrocks national park--the turn-off to it is about half-way between Albuquerque and Santa Fe--you pass through an Indian reservation to get access. Wonderful vistas and a nice hike to boot. The geological formations are like another planet--highly recommend. My wife and I have gone there several different times. And of course, just drive up through the O'Keeffe country--amazing colors in the morning and afternoon especially. The Chama steam railroad is an enjoyable ride with lots of scenery and included both New Mexico and Southern Colorado in the trip. So much to see, so little time! Another tip--the locals often gather at the Del Charo restaurant (part of the Inn of the Governors (in the heart of old Santa Fe)--good comfort food, drinks--great prices. Enjoy your trip!

And, oh yes, take the drive from Santa Fe to the Ski Run area--beautiful views on clear days.

The Loretto Chapel in downtown Santa Fe is where the mysterious staircase is. It's now a museum instead of a Catholic church. The Enchanted Circle is a scenic byway going around Wheeler Peak, the highest point in New Mexico, thru Taos, Angel FIre, Red River and Questa.

Check with the Rangers on fire damaged areas. I think Bandelier suffered some.

Yes, Tent Rocks is a must, and the Valles Caldera on the way to Bandelier. Most of the galleries on Canyon Road will be open (lots of schlock, tho). And the Echo natural amphitheater on the way to Chama. And if you're interested in the history of the Manhattan Project, museums in Los Alamos. And if you go to Taos from SF, take the old High Road instead of the highway. This is a great time of year to be there.

Good point--as of last year, when we visited there, getting into Bandelier was entirely by shuttle because the parking area was so limited by flood damage and repair. The shuttle actually worked pretty efficiently but much of the trail that we were interested in was not accessible. So, as suggested, check it out before driving there.

Just checked the Bandelier website. Access to Frijoles Canyon, the part you want to see, is by shuttle only, from White Rocks. Doesn't seem to be a big inconvenience, tho.

If you go up the High Road part way toward Taos, you will come to two fantastic adobe missions: Chimayo and at Las Trampas. Both are fantastic photo opportunities.

If you have time, go on to Taos and visit Taos Pueblo, a mile north of Taos, and the Rancho de Taos mission (made famous by Ansel and Georgia) on the south end of Taos. More great photo opportunities.

I was at Bandelier in June, was nearly deserted, just drove in, no problems.

If you go to Bandelier, you may want to visit nearby Las Alamos, where they have a great museum in town with lots of info about Trinity, Little Boy, and Fat Man.

I live in Santa Fe and you have some great suggestions from others that have responded. This is the best time of year to visit SF in my opinion. Weather is gorgeous and the summer tourist crowd is gone. My one additional suggestion....if you get to Chama, or on the other end, Taos, take State Highway 64 between Tres Piedras and Tierra Amerilla. I think it might be the most beautiful drive in New Mexico.

One oth thought...check the local newspaper for fiestas at the Native American pueblos. These are fascinating and great photo ops. Harvest festivals should be occurring about now.
