Hang back before going to Windows 11

Down loaded the latest Windows update and my laptop went into a blue screen loop I couldn't get out of no matter how I tried and I am not an amateur at resolving issues. I had to take it to my old buddy who runs a pc repair shop. His immediate response was "you too eh." and he pointed to another laptop with the same problem. So just be aware of a possible problem and hang fire on any upgrades for now.

Your topic title refers to Win 11. The text of your post refers to "Windows update". Which update caused you the problem?

From the title I inferred from Win 10 updating to Win 11.
From what he didn't say. Could have been 7.

An update is a minor change. Win 10 to Win 11 is an UPGRADE.

But in layman's terms...

There really is a huge difference. Updates rarely if ever require new hardware. Upgrades often require something that a user’s current hardware lacks.

The main reason IT departments everywhere are cautious, and stay one or two or three operating systems behind, is that they are afraid — of the hardware costs AND of the software applications that a new system might “break.”

They call “upgrades” the bleeding edges of technology because early adopters “take the arrows in the back” (endure or find incompatibilities the beta testers missed) for the rest of us.

I like to wait 3-6 months before I leap.

I know that, you know that, but not everyone knows that.

Details.

Yep. I'm just trying to be informative to those who need it... Computing IS a minefield of details that "gotcha".

My biggest cringe is the use of "Gigs" and "Megs".
Gig and Meg are already plural.
Short for Gigabits/bytes.

As a retired IT Professional, I completely agree. We pretty much were exclusively a "Windows" shop, and we beta-tested most all of Microsoft's updates/upgrades when it came to Windows, and the various product suites. We were large enough to "demand" some custom OS modifications. The big question was always, did we wring out the versions enough to ensure that roll-outs would be largely painless for our customers?

We also coordinated closely with the hardware vendors to ensure that hardware/firmware/software problems were minimized. We also had some real wizards in 2nd and 3rd level support who could break just about anything by artificially load testing products.

I was always under the impression that Win 8, was the last real OS developed, that Win 10 was an overlay. Before Win 10, an OS upgrade required total re-installation, erasing everything on the existing drive, and starting from scratch. However, when I upgraded from Win 8, to Win 10, everything on my hard drives remained functional.

Then there’s this one:

GB = gigaBYTES
Gb = gigaBITS

…same for MB and Mb, KB and KB…

All of this is GiBberish to some.

This thread is strange. Is there an official update/upgrade for Windows 11 out?
