Do you want money if your lens is lost in the mail? If the answer is yes, then you need insurance.
Insurance provides peace-of-mind which is the most important reason to purchase it.

Definitely. If it is lost or damaged through shipping, without it, you are out of luck.
Get a personal articles policy with your insurance agency, I have State Farm, covers all losses or repairs including those due to loss in the mail. Not ridiculously expensive either.
Great idea DBrock. Thanks
There are two possible outcomes.... buy insurance and it gets delivered. Don't buy insurance and it gets lost. Murphy's law dominates.
ALWAYS!!! Fed-ex and UPS both have destroyed stuff for me—but they have been good about taking care of issues. Make sure you pack it according to their “guidelines”. I had a packaging store do a lense for me—UPS dropped it, then didn’t want to cover it. Then I sent them the receipt where their store packed it. End of story.
Be mindful of the difference between UPS's liability for the declared value of a package, and insurance coverage for the contents. These concepts are related but operate differently. This from UPS:
https://www.ups.com/us/en/shipping/services/value-added/declared-value.pageUPS's liability is limited to US$100.00 on packages with no declared value. If the value of your goods exceeds US$100.00, you can declare a higher value, up to US$50,000.00 per package, by entering the declared value in the UPS shipping system used and paying an additional charge. Declared Value charges for freight collect and third-party shipments may be billed to your shipper account. For more information, refer to ups.com/terms.
When a shipper declares a value in excess of $100, it does not receive any form of insurance. Insurance for in-transit goods is available through UPS’s licensed affiliate UPS Capital Insurance Agency, Inc.
https://upscapital.com/product-services/InsureShield-OnDemand/No more haggling with carriers over unpaid carrier liability or declared-value claims. Should you experience a loss or damage, regardless of the carrier you use, InsureShield™ OnDemand shipment insurance coverage can reimburse you for the invoice value of your goods, plus freight.* Your claim is handled quickly and easily, directly through UPS Capital.
Thanks for the comprehensive reply regarding how ups treats declared value and insurance.
One of the reasons I asked about insurance is that Nikon only charges $17.50 for return shipping, far less than I paid for shipping and insurance. What gives with that?
