Our friend here Jules Karney helped me out with some advice on applying to be a MaxPreps photographer, and with the help of him and a local MP guy, I have been conditionally accepted pending some full galleries once the fall high school season begins. I've been getting in some practice and concentrating on shooting in their required "style", which is a good bit different than what I'd shoot otherwise. Here are a few of those shots: the first 4 are with 100-400 zoom of our local high school in the playoffs, the second 4 are incoming 9th graders with a 400mm 2.8 I was able to buy recently :)

Thanks for the airtime Tom. I am always there to lend a helping hand when I can.
I am cleaning equipment, practicing with different lenses, different settings, etc. Can't wait for the third week in August to start shooting again.
Be well,
Jules

Very good work Randy. Jules was there for me when I had some questions about shooting volleyball in poorly lit gyms. Great photographer and very helpful guy.

Thanks Don. I do what I can to help guys and gals shoot better volleyball and other sports. Volleyball is a tough one for sure. I am still working at it. Most important which I think I forgot to mention is the white balance. If auto is doing the trick, go to custom. The steps for that is on youtube.
Be well,
Jules

Congrats on your epic rite of passage Thurber... wonderful that you're going to be shooting commercially now with an agent no less! Good Show!

Yes Jules is indeed the bellwether on this forum and a master of his craft... fabulous that you're following in his footsteps... Besides Jules needs a little more competition to keep him up on his game. lol

VERY nice set of imagery Thurber... and kudos on procuring at 400mm f/2.8 which btw is an ultimate tool for the lion's share of outdoor sports. That f/2.8 aperture allows focus to lock virtually instantly in all be the worst illumination scenarios... I found going from f/4 to f/2.8 made a HUGE difference in my "keeper" rate for soccer.

One thing I've discovered on my journey is if you want to get and retain clients you absolutely must make the player look Stellar! Forget about making other photographers impressed with your kit or savvy in the craft... it's all about making Mom and Dad's child look simply amazing! While this may not be a high priority for MaxPreps if you are serious about generating clients for life and a healthy revenue stream it is the key (in my humble estimation).

Great to see you have the ball in several of these images... No ball? It's more likely a throwaway then... While there are exceptions i.e. capturing the charismatic aura of the venue during the height of the action... a.k.a. cheerleader shots typically work... Cheerleaders have Moms and Dads also... lol

All the best on your venture as a commercial shooter Thurber
Will be looking in this forum to see more of your fabulous sports artistry.
