NO CL scares me I don't like the idea of someone coming to my house to buy or sell me.
That's why I always meet at a public place...Lowes parking lot...anywhere public works.
The Sigma 70-300 APO DG was the first lens I bought to use with my Pentax. It was great, until the cat knocked it off the table and disabled the auto focus. I bought another, and it became partially disabled when the lens strap broke, but I still use it every day. My pentax'es have built in stabilization, so hand held shots at 300mm come out very sharp. Very useful lens, and highly recommended.

This shot was taken with that same lens....its not bad....but I found mine on CL for 60 bucks....so.
Have you considered hiring out as a personal shopper?
The Sigma APO Macro 70-300 is better than the non- APO 70-300, an earlier version.
I have the Sigma 70-300 APO DG Macro and am very happy with it, good optics, and light weight. The rotating front element is a drawback though, but, the price is right.
Here's two closeup I shot with the Sigma in open shade.

Help. I normally don't stray away from Nikon glass, but I also don't like to spend money on something I will seldom use. From time to time I would like the reach of a lens that zooms to 300mm. I have an older Nikon af 70-300, the one without the drive motor in the lens and basically it belongs with the rest of the barn yard "litter", if you get my drift.
I too have the Nikon af 70-300, I seldom use this lens due to the fact that I cant use its full potential without a tripod and I believe I have enough gear to lug around without the added weight of a tripod. Due to a unsteady hand I really need the help of a decent tripod using a lens of 70-300 or at least a good mono-pod, so I tend to leave this lens in the back of my car.
I bought it with the intention of doing some landscape shots out on the "North Yorkshire Moors" here in the UK. To be honest it has not earned or justified the financial outlay.
I should have done what I did before I bought my ultra wide angle lens and that was to hire it first but did not. I'm sure there are many of us that have bought a lens only to find that it is seldom used. If I don't use it by the middle of summer 2013 then it will find itself on Ebay or for sale on here.
The leaning curve is a never ending road, sometimes pleasant almost always expensive.
I know it's more expensive but you might consider a Tamron SP AF70-300mm Di VC USD. It has IS which can really help with those hand held long range shots. If you are more likely to be using a tripod then the IS is less important. I seldom use a tripod so IS is important to me. It has gotten good reviews and I find the IQ of most shots is great for viewing on a PC or printing up to 8x10. When they aren't so great it's usually my fault.
It can often be found new for under $400.
These were taken with 2 Sigma lenses and I'm very happy with both of them. Paid $160 for one and $165 for the other off Amazon.
70-300 macro
75-300 zoom
