Mainly a small machine that moves your camera in millimeter increments to a subject.

Mainly macro photography.

Subject 2 inches away, the machine moves your camera ever so slightly towards the subject for a set amount of shots, ie., 20.

Then a stacking program puts them all together so your subject (say a fly) is focused over many points and the dof is fantastic.

From Wikipedia:

"Focus stacking (or hyperfocus) is a digital image processing technique which combines multiple images taken at different focus distances to give a resulting image with a greater depth of field (DOF) than any of the individual source images. Focus stacking can be used in any situation where individual images have a very shallow depth of field; macro photography and optical microscopy are two typical examples."

You need a tripod and a focusing rail. You focus at the front of your subject and then use the rail to move your camera. You have to take 7 or so shoots. The you down load to your stacking program. I use Helicon Focus. And it will combined all your shots into one. That gives you sharp pictures with no DOF problems.

Picture one was taken with a D300 & 105 macro lens tripod mounted on the focusing rail (#2). The plane of focus is incrementally moved and the resulting images are combined using a program such as Helicon Focus. The blossom is the size of my index finger nail

owners there is a firmware 'hack' called Magic Lantern

http://magiclantern.wikia.com/wiki/Magic_Lantern_Firmware_Wiki

Mainly for the video guys, but lots of nice additions for stills shots.
It has a 'section' (if that is what you would call it) for focus stacking
I have Magic Lantern for a while now and find the focusing assistance a great help.
Sorry folks, but it is only for Canon cameras so far.
