Live primarily in talus slopes in alpine meadows of the Rocky Mountains. Actually, they are members of the rabbit family. Unlike most common rabbits, they can communicate through a variety of calls and the males actually sing to the females. Females generally have two litters of 2-6 babies who leave the nest after 30 days. They do not hibernate and are active during winter via tunnels under the snow. Picas spend considerable time during the summer collecting grass to cache for their winter "fodder". They are mostly active during the sunnier parts of a day when they are alert for predators. And, they are very elusive subjects for photographers!!

Wow, in the second photo, front on he looks like a living teddy bear. Thanks for posting the set, Jim; never saw a pica rabbit.

We found them in a Mono Lake workshop, by taking California 120 west from Lee Vining in the Sierra's, which is the pass through Yosemite. They were really sweet and showed off. Thanks for your info on them. Bev

Very nice shots of this cute little critter! I also like the shot of all those heavily armed photographers. They look like a fun group.

Thanks Carol...been trying for several years to update my Pica photos and finally came trough with these. Its hard to predict when they will come out and where. they were a fun group and this was only about half of them as the crowd started thinning.

Good to hear you were able to see these little cuties, Bev as you don't see many photos of them appearing on web sites. I have driven that pass many times and never thought to stop and look...last time through two years ago a coyote was chasing a ground squirrel next to the road. Never saw if he enjoyed a meal or went away hungry!!
