I have a Nikon 5500 with a Tamron 18-400 lens. Recently several times it has not taken a photo when I pushed the shutter but gave me a message something like "the shutter did not release push the shutter release again." I do and it takes the photo for which it is set. photo. What is the problem? It occasionally says the lens is not connected and a quick twist fixes that , but the two do not seem to be connected. Is it saying I need a new camera?

You always need a new camera, that's a given.
Could it be you are in mirror up mode?
A good cleaning of the contacts may be in order- the ones on the back of the lens and front of the camera.
Does it act like this with other lenses?

Get a good contact cleaner (NOT A SPRAY!) and carefully clean the contacts on the camera and the lens.

I don't know if your camera is broken but it may be a good reason just to buy a new camera.

I had a similar issue with my old d70... do clean your contacts and if that doesn’t work, carefully weigh the cost of repair to the worth of the camera. My d70 took a trip to Nikon for $250, it worked for awhile and then the same problem reappeared.

It is saying you need a lens that can talk properly to your camera. Like a NIKON lens.
I would also support the idea you need to really clean your contacts on both. Tamron also has a tendency to use lesser quality parts than OEM's do. The contact on the lens may not stick up enough to make solid contact with your well engineered quality NIKON contacts.

I had a similar problem with a Tamron lens on my D300. It seemed to happen mostly in high humidity conditions. Cleaning the contacts cleared the problem temporarily, I think until moisture built up again. I eventually replaced it with a Nikon lens and haven't had the problem since. Overall, the Tamron worked well but the contacts were extremely sensitive to humidity.

I have 4 Tamron lenses and have never had a contact error message with any off them and they are warranted for 6 years versus Nikons I believe 1 year. I also have never had any problems with my 5 year old Sigma. If my budget and domestic life allowed I might well use all Nikon. The G2 Tamron are extremely well made and I am more than pleased with them. I'll Stick with my TAMRON'S.

These are good suggestions. Be sure to check mirror up mode. If you are closer than the minimum focus distance the the shutter will not release unless you changed he settings for shutter release.

how do you know Tamron uses lesser quality parts?
do you have ANY proof of that?
so the nikon factory has better contact pieces then Tamron?
I would think that info would be pretty hard to get and even harder to get from both nikon and tameron to compare. Are you comparing the cost they paid or the actual quality? How are you judging the quality?
Like all manufacturers cost of parts is part of the whole business plan.
Are you saying that because it has the Nikon name on it it automatically has better parts even things like contact points?
I'm sure Nikon doesn't make all the parts inside every lens.

I have that lens for a Canon 90D - never an issue.

My former employer used Tamron lenses on Canons and Nikons. I remember three failures out of 440 lenses from 2005 to 2012! Two were dropped. The other had dirty contacts.

Buying new every time something doesn't work right is no way to save money. If the zipper on my jacket gets stuck, I try to fix it first rather than simply throwing the jacket out and buying a new one.

I was about to come say nearly the same thing. I've had the Tamron 18-400 since 2019 and never an issue with it on my Nikon 5200. During this time I've used this lens more than any of my others and it had traveled quite a bit. As others have said I would check and possibly clean the contacts on the camera and lens. I will also stick with my Tamron.
