Have you found the images that inspire you the most always have the most pixels?

Not in the least. Some of the best ever were shot on film, anyway.

I would love to have a hundred megapixels just for landscape or anything else I want maximum details on.

I would love to have a 100mp camera as long as it would handle high ISO's and have great dynamic range capabilities.... Alas, I suspect that is too much to ask for.

More MP allows tiny crops that still have sufficient detail, similar to digital zoom. E.g., if you are interested in using a crop that is only one tenth of the overall image, it will still be 10 MP.

Thaz common fantasy, armchair experts imagining that detail and clarity resides mainly in the MP count.

Cropping to 10% will work pretty well if the following requirements are well met:
• Shutter speed is adequate for the cropped effective FL if handheld. The IS isn’t calibrated for that effective FL.
• Better apertures only.
• Better areas of the frame/coverage.
• MF’d critically at magnification, or plenty of DoF if trusting AF.
• Lower ISO range only.
• Content fits within DR.

Most images are not executed nearly as stringently as above. Having enough MP within the crop area is only part of the picture. Optimizing all other parameters of IQ is the whole picture.

That’s not what I said.

A key word in my reply was “allows”, indicating that the excess MP are a requirement for the cropping, but not, as you assumed, sufficient for good crops. If you didn’t have the excess MP, the cropped result would not be very good no matter how many of the other factors that you mention we’re working in your favor.

But also remember in the famous short story where that quote originated, the blind wanted to "fix" the one-eyed man by blinding him.

First they would need to catch him and find his eye.

Successful photographers do the one thing the unsuccessful are unwilling to do: they always buy the camera with the most pixels.

There are a few reasons why a photographer doesn't keep up with the latest tech.
1.) Don't have enough coins (quite common I imagine).
2.) Don't feel the need to (also quite common).

But the cameras will keep being made to ever higher thresholds...it's what pretty much every industry strives to do.

I doubt wedding photographers need more than 24MP to get by.
Studio work...yeah, they will want to go higher.
Wildlife/sports...same...higher.
Street photography...24MP will do.
Landscape...as high as they can afford.

Fair enough. Thanks for explaining.

That would be a case in favor of high MP.

”Catch” doesn’t hafta mean a race. Catching by trickery is SOP.

Professional high end advertising work. Art directors demand perfection. Back in the day, if you showed up with a 35mm camera, I don't care if nit was a Leica, Canon or a Nikon, they would kick you out. Hasselblad or Bronica you might pass, but a Sheet film camera would make them smile.
100 megapixels these days, are what Ansel Adams and the classic photographers of yesteryear would use today. They'd drive an old Ford van out to Death Valley or the Everglades and suffer for their work. To hell with the cost or go out collecting beer cans to cash in to make the payments (shoot weddings with an Argus?). There is a purpose, use what you have at the moment be it a Apple 7 or a Samsung S21 maybe and Olympus PEN 9? Get it the way you want it is the vision of the photographer with the technology you have on hand (in hand) that will get it done.
