Seems like it would be good to check for negative feedback on that particular seller. If they are within the U.S. and the jurisdiction of a States Attorney General, you're probably okay. You can probably choose Pay Pal, and use a credit card for added security.

Could be a million reasons:
Buyer's remorse, tranny broke on the car, hospital visit, need to sell fast.
When I was in the gun business, I could always get top dollar for any firearm I wanted to sell because I was "traveling in that circle". But to sell a camera at that time, I had to give it away...or keep it.

I got a Canon 3-15 F4L for 800, brand new in the box, never opened. Guy won it in a drawing and didn't want it.

A couple of weeks ago, someone was selling a "Used- Like New" D600 for around $1,100. I email and asked for details. He wanted me to send a MoneyGram, which I would buy with cash, to someone in Athens, Greece. He would supposedly then send me the camera - from Brooklyn.

I emailed Amazon, and his listing disappeared, but it was back later. A few days later, Latinos R Us and one other seller were selling a D600 at a similar price. I had to correspond with them via email, not through Amazon. I declined. When you correspond through Amazon, they keep all correspondence for two years, so you have some protection. Again, I emailed Amazon about these two new sellers, and their listings disappeared -but came back.

If you deal 100% through Amazon and follow their rules, you're protected. Otherwise, you're just throwing your money away.

EDIT: I just checked Amazon, and under the D600, there is a listing for a used one for $1,100. When I clicked on that, it was not listed. I guess they just keep trying to list it and trick someone into parting with his money.

On the plus side, I just got a brand new Nikon 28-300mm lens that was listed as "Used-Like New" on Amazon. It was brand new - didn't look like it had even been taken out of the box - for $925, delivered. I saved almost $150.

When that buzzer goes off, listen to it! Your better judgement seems to be warning you.

Any time they want to deal "outside the fence" of Amazon, that's not a good sign.

NEVER make an Amazon or Ebay purchase outside of their system. You will have no buyers protection at all. It is also 1 of the ways that scamsters get credit card info to commit fraud.

I bought an MB-200 battery grip for my D-200 off a vendor from Amazon that was a Pawn shop. Gave me the same reasoning.... new, never used, but open box.

It arrived OK, seemed nice, but by the fact that it had someone else's battery cover in the slot for where you are supposed to put it when using the grip (yay me, another battery cover just in case) I knew it had been used. Everything powered up OK, and all seemed good. Took it to use it at a wedding about a month later, and found that it powers the camera OK, but the verticle grip buttons/controls do not work. Too late to return. Complained to Amazon, but they replied that it was an outside vendor (even though it was on their page) and out of their control. I only purchase things sold by and fulfilled by Amazon now. It costs a few extra bucks, but at least I know they will stand behind it. Other than that, I usually buy used from KEH, because they DO stand behind everything.

For me this is a bit tricky to respond to as I have purchased 2 items right here on the Hog and both went very smoothly, but not without that little voice going off in the back of my mind that they could have been well planned scams. If they are a legit seller you can pepper them with all sorts of requests that would require them to go through the system (eBay, Amazon etc.) to verify the listing. Scammers won't do it as they know your on to them. What does a like new D600 go for on eBay? If it is significantly higher one would have to ask yourself why isn't the seller selling it there for significantly more money? It's easy, protected and is a great place to maximize the value of the item. Now that I've written this I see that I must be in a coma because my last purchase here on the Hog pretty much violated everything I wrote above! But, I'm loving my like new Mark iii, 24-70 L 2.8 and 70-200 L 2.8 ii gear I got here on the Hog!
