A couple of years ago I bought one of these off a local photographer. When I went to see it, I took my 24-70 2.8 to test it against. As others have said, it is totally sharp and held up well against the more expensive lens. I now use it in my "lightweight kit". If I know I'm going to be lugging equipment around for a few hours, I will take that lens and a 70-200 f4 (in place of the 70-200 f 2.8). I can highly recommend this lens.
Your experience with the 24-85 matches my experience and also that of my photographer friend. He had a 24-70 but did not like carrying around that much weight especially when he tried the 24-85 and found it as sharp as the much more expensive lens. Of course the f2.8 lens opening is not there but with digital cameras raising the ISO is not a problem to compensate with no more grain noticed in any photo he or I have ever taken. He says he does not miss the 24-70 one bit.
