D7000 Setting Shutter Speed

D7000, setting the shutter speed I am at a lost. I am using a 17-55 f2.8 lens. I trying to use "M" manual setting of f2.8, 800 shutter speed +/- and 1000 ISO+/-. When I try to do this, it shows my shutter speed at 250. I have read the manual, still lost. What I am trying to do is shoot my grandsons basketball games. What am I doing wrong?

Have you got your flash popped up? 1/250 sec is flash synch speed. In M for Manual, you adjust your shutter as well as your aperture manually.

Nice analysis!
There is almost always a missing piece of the puzzle.
The pop-up flash sounds the likely culprit.

....I'll stop scratching my head.

Hey Doc ..... why manual mode? ..... try S (shutter priority) ..... I doubt that you need anything faster than 1/500 .....

But to answer your question ..... you must have something set that you're not aware of ..... are you trying to use the flash for these .....
