The San Rafael Swell is the eastern side of an anticline that is more steeply dipping than the western side. It is cut by I-70 about 20 miles west of Green River, UT. I took these pictures about 3 weeks ago.

The last picture is a scanned Kodachrome slide that I took in 1973 when as a geology student I was traveling to Cedar City, UT for field camp as a geology student from the Univ. of Missouri at Rolla. I had never seen anything like this and it completely blew me away. It still does.

Magnificent series! The second image is especially nice with the way the rock formation enhances the diagonal line formed by the land. All wonderful!

I spent about a week hiking around there many years ago. Your photos have done justice to the geological formations. Well done. Did you explore the San Rafael River while you were there?

Excellent series, Alan!! I spend a lot of time in this area on the many good gravel roads that crisscross the area both north and south of I-70. There are several Utah publications/maps that highlight these roads and sights that would be handy if you return and feel an urge to explore the area further.

Thank you. We didn't check out the San Rafael River but it is on the list. We did go to Black Dragon Canyon.

Thank you. I have accumulated quite a few, but I'm always looking for more. I have geologic maps of much of the area. I find that combined with other maps I can find places that are of interest to me.
