I have not owned a Tel-Converter since the mid 70's. (I do know they have come a long ways since then) That said:
What is your thoughts on using a converter on this lens? And what is a good converter for this lens?
I am just playing around for myself, and I so love this lens, I just wondered about using a converter.
I thank you for any opinions in advance. "I REALLY THANK YOU MUCH"!!!
Thanks,
Boone.
First, I would check on the Nikon site for compatibility. I know a lot of the lenses cannot be used with a TC.
I am not familiar with this lens or TC candidates.
I know that there may be issues with the rear element of the extended into the camera body when mounted. Depending on the glass of the TC there may be a mismatch that doesn't allow a TC to be attached.
Others may have more direct experience.
Nikon doesn't list the 50 1.8 on their compatibility chart. Looking at mine and the TC-14 E II side by side, I don't think it is possible. Just looking at the two, I believe damage would result from trying, so I won't.

The 50mm 1.8 is one of them.
What would you accomplish with an effective 100mm f/3.5 lens that differs from all the many options of zooms and primes that cover 100mm?
You should have shared your camera body model # to ask for help.
I wouldn't play with any TC on a 50 mm lens. What other lenses do you have? What do you shoot? Is this a question about "if" it can be done? Or do you really want to use it for some particular type of picture?
If you can afford a Nikon Teleconverter, you might be better served to use the $ toward a longer FL lens or a quality zoom.

No thoughts at all. Just a simple question!
Thanks,
Boone.

I mainly use a Nikon D750, and I am a portrait photographer. I was just curious, that's all.

If you were going to buy one, I was probing to what intended purpose. I would expect you cannot use a Nikon branded teleconverter with a 50mm lens, not being able to physically connect together the two pieces of equipment. You might / might not be able to use a third-party, but then comes back to why.

This might be the comment of the week.

• Compact kit.
• Rather close focus for 100mm.
That was the reasoning when TCs actually did fit onto a 50mm.
Acoarst it makes even more sense when using an 85 cuz those are as fast as 50s and you don’t see a whole lotta 170/3.5 lenses available.

There is no "WHY", I was just curious.

As an alternative, KEH currently has a 105mm f2.8 D for $384 in excellent condition (and $272 for “bargain”) - not much more than the Nikon TC and similar size and weight to the 50 + the TC. And of course, there is the classic 105 f2.5 AI, and as a portrait photographer, manual focus (and a $125-$175 price) might not be an issue.

You can see that your rearmost glass surface of the 50 is recessed only ~1mm at inf’y focus. Most modern TCs have a protruding front element for use with long lenses. Even an eBay picture shows that protrusion clearly enough to warn you that the protruding front needs better than ~1mm of recessing of the rear glass in the host lens.
