Since it is only about a 2 hr drive, I figure on going down there for a day sometime this summer. I would think that there would be plenty of photo ops. I'll have my R5 along with a 15-35, 24-105, and 100-400. Any suggestions from anyone who has been there?
Thanks!

In Chicago, the two zoos are reservation only for entry. You might want to check the Bronx access policy before randomly showing up. Only the outdoor exhibits are available.

I've been to the San Diego Zoo several times. From that experience, I suggest dropping the 15-35mm lens. The 24-105mm zoom lens will go plenty wide. The 100-400mm lens will enable you to reach the distant animals and to do cameos.

I used to live 15 minutes from it. Great place, small in scale, can get crowded. Best time is right now - mating season - and in a few weeks the babies come out. There is a series of pools near the tiger exhibit that host migrating birds - mostly waterfowl and waders - in a natural looking setting, and pretty up close.

Best times to go are as the doors open and at the end of the day when they feed the animals.

The pandemic has affected access - you need to reserve in advance, and they no longer have free Wednesdays. As a resident of the Bronx and nearby Yonkers, I have visited the zoo 100s of times.

Aside from going on an African safari or some other far-off land, you won't find a better place for photo-ops of exotic animals- and in an urban location no less! The big cats roam-free is a special compound. Peacocks mingle with the visitors. You can get up close and personal with an elephant- I remember a vending machine with elephant treats.

I use to play hookey from school to go there and take pictures.

Your lens inventory is fine.

Back in the day, I got lots of good photos at the Central Park Zoo. Smaller, but worth a visit to photograph animals and people. https://centralparkzoo.com/

For zoo's in general my favorite lens is my Nikon 24-120. But your 100-400 would also be a take along.

24-105 and longer. do not need a wide angle. Make sure to make reservations before going.

Use to live there. When the kids were young 30 years ago we had an annual passs and would go frequently. In the 1970’s the zoo was trans formed so that the @nimals were provided their natural habitat for living, a great feat for the zoo. Enjoy do check for pandemic restrictions. While you are there check out Arthur Avenue for dinner 2-3 blocks away

The Bronx Zoo is currently open, but you must purchase date specific entry tickets in advance.

In my opinion, it is the finest zoo in America. You also want to visit the small zoo in Central Park. You might want to rent a 70-200 f/2.8 or 300 f/2.8. You should use a long fast lens to shoot through some of the enclosures without getting the wire. There are also plenty of open spaces. It is a large zoo.

It is by reservation. Wednesdays are free so avoid those days. Animals are in natural habitats. The long lens will serve you well on some exhibits; the gorillas are very close but behind glass. You battle glare and fingerprints there but you can get some very good shots. Get there early and be prepared to spend some money.
