Check to make sure that Hwy 1 is open again after slides took the road out.

The slide I have heard of on Hwy 1 was south of Monterey on the Big Sur Coast. But perhaps there are slides north of S.F. that didn't make the news like the one on Big Sur?
This is a beautiful part of the country, but I don’t think you can fly in or out of Yachats directly. It looks like the nearest airport is located at Newport to the north. If it were me, I’d fly up and drive back. You’d have to check to see who flies in and out of there. Have a great trip through one of our favorite places.
As an Oregonian, drive north to south. 90% of what you want to see is on the west (ocean) side of hwy 101. You would get real tired of crossing traffic all day if you drove from south to north. Be careful on the beach for sleeper waves. There is a “Kodak” moment around every bend. Enjoy..

I wouldn’t worry so much about crossing traffic to get the different stops. In general the passenger will get better views heading South, the driver will heading North. But it’s not as simple as that. Things look different depending on which direction you’re driving and if you’re driving South through Cape Perpetua the best views will be in your rear view mirror.
Wow..so much distance so little time. In ‘87 my sons and I left Mill Valley on a Saturday morning, and headed north to Astoria, Oregon. Caught the Coast Hwy 1 at Jenner and headed north. We explored almost every side road, wandered into the ‘Lost Coast’ and arrived in Crescent City on Thursday noon. We took our time. The plan was for two weeks to Astoria, then decide to continue north, or catch the Interstate to home. I owned my own business, so taking an extra days wasn’t too bad. However, my reason for sharing is to advise to do research on where you most want to see. The Oregon Coast is awesome, as well as the north 101 / 1 route through California. There have been many suggestions select what would be a “must see”, and allow for free time to explore that gem to will stumble on to. Our adventure was epic, and when a grandson came to Grants Pass to visit he stated “I want to see the places dad keeps telling me about”. Enjoy your trip.
Thanks to all for all of your thoughts, suggestions and tips! If I get any "gems" I'll post them!
