Hi all. Would value your input on this one. Upgrading from the slower kit lense (55-200) zoom to a faster zoom the 70-200 2.8. I shoot wildlife, nature, some sports but will be transitioning to add portraits, people, events, while still shooting my first love wildlife/nature. Nikonian D5100 camera body. Would value you opinions on lenses and your opinion on if VC should or should not be a make or break purchase consideration. I know the Nikon's 70-200 is a freak of the photographic world in terms of quality, focus speed and build but it's way out of my price range. Looks like Sigma or Tamron. Please weigh in. If I am overlooking a brand let me know that also. THANKS!
Wish I could get a Nikkor version brand new for $1,500. Just got my 24-70 and I love it so much that I want to get the 70-200. I used the 28-300 for a full year 90% of the time, it's also very sharp and very nice but the wider aperture really hits a spot for me!
You may want to consider on older Nikon 70 - 210 f/4. I have one and I love it. It is half the size of the 2.8 since it is leghter you can hold it at speeds a lot slower than the 2.8. Read Ken Rockwells review. I see them on eBay once in awhile they go for about $200. I got mine for $190. - Dave
Thank you both for your input!
I use a Tamron 18-280 and it works great. Replaced 2 Canon L series lens with 1 Tamron. Very satisfied.
Richard, Thanks for the reply. what kind of shooting do you do and do you find the lack of VC/IS at low light with this lense is an issue?
