For me it is Nikon because I had my first one around 1990, then I used an F3 for many years and over time I collected a few lenses. The Nikon system permits me to use my old lenses, which I do as 100% manual. I also use my old flash units with my modern DSLRs.

The other reason, which I believe is a follow on to the lens matter, is the fact that I like to "know" my camera thoroughly.

I bought the D600 because it controls similar to my D7000 and so it permits me to react faster and I miss less shots as a result.

very true, people rely more on camera than on their talent.

Hi Jonef, I too know their is a big difference in lenses. I have 3 main lenses that I use at the moment, a sigma 10-20 a Canon 50mm f1.4 and a Canon 100mm L macro. There is a noticeable difference between the 3. The Canon 100mm L is by far the sharpest, then the Canon 50mm, followed by the Sigma. But sometimes I visit the galleries of some the people espousing the virtues of this or that gear and wonder at the poor standard of their photographs.

Same reason people pull for different sports teams to which they have no direct conection....It's fun and gets the blood pumping.

This is just an example of individuals thinking they are better than everyone else. My choices are superior to yours and those that differ are inferior. I chose this camera, so it MUST be better than anything else out there.

This attitude is a microcosm of the world and its problems. Scary, isn't it?

If the top ten prosumer DSLRs each took the same photo under identifiable conditions and the resulting photographs were produced under the same conditions. How many of us could state which photo belonged to which camera. I think it would be fun to see the results.

If you're looking at the LCD screen, turn it round and you'll see the brand, simples
Seriously though, I have a friend who shoots Canon (3 of) and his wife can tell which camera produced which print....very strange

I have been on the Canon bandwagon since I bought an A1 back in June 1978. I was researching Canon, Nikon, Olympus, and Minolta.

Finals had Canon against Nikon.

Nikon didn't have a camera comparable to the A1 at the time but I noticed that the new A1 was less expensive than the newest of the as-comparable-as-possible Nikon. I casually mentioned that to the store rep (this was in Houston) and he said the higher Nikon prices had come about around 1972 when Paul Simon's #1 hit "Kodachrome" mentioned "Nikon camera" so many times. Ever since then everyone wanted a Nikon. High demand equals high price.

Simple. I got my first Nikon (S3) in 1966 and was so impressed I bought a Nikon F in 1968. Since then the investment in glass has resulted in more Nikon bodies that I care to admit. That didn't stop me buying a Fuji S2Pro (same lens mount) before my current D700 & D300s. But, at the end of the day it comes down to the system and the investment in it.

Just for the record. I have never even heard of any of the Super Markets that you listed. I have lived in Syracuse,NY, Tucson, AZ, all over Oregon, and Alaska. I have visited all but two of the states and several in Canada and Mexico. Recently I visited NV, AZ, CO, NM, UT. None of those names did I notice. Of course I was traveling so supermarkets were not visited often.

I would look at the Exif data and then claim I could see the difference.
Manufactures and there add departments are like the pitchmen of old. If you use a major brand like Nikon, Canon or Sony, etc. the onus is on the photographer.

I would suspect we could only recognize full frame sensor versus crop sensor, kit lens versus premium lens, and that's about it other than added noise levels when using high ISO settings in very low light.

When you find Nikon using Sony manufactured sensors, some Fuji cameras actually being Pentax, Leica and Zeiss glass being used by various brands, Minolta making lenses for sale under various other brand names but Sony now owns Minolta and you just know the contracts were not cancelled, etc. you realize there is in-breeding among the majors because they know who makes the best specific components and buy from each other to avoid expensive factory and research redundancy.

Car and motorcycle manufacturers do it too. Toyota and Yamaha are somehow related, for example. A Yamaha motorcycle owners manual I got once said, "Congratulations and thank you from Toyota Motor Company for the purchase of your new Yamaha motorcycle." Yet there are also Yamaha racing car engines in Ford Taurus SRO models (is there actually a Yamaha car?), Toyota parts in GM cars, GM cars that were built in a GM/Toyota partner plant in California, and Toyota hybrid car control systems in other brands of hybrid cars. Ford Ranger trucks are actually Mazda B2000 trucks with different tags attached. Yamaha, Honda, Kawasaki, and Suzuki use chrome plated parts that are plated in one factory they all use. Yamaha musical drum parts and stands are chrome plated there as well.

Thus it wouldn't surprise me if the Big 3 dSLR brands use several or many parts they buy from each other and from other third party manufacturers and all are on very friendly terms behind the "theoretical" market share wars. It happens in every other industry so why wouldn't it happen in digital cameras?

Amen sister. It's like saying Chevy is better the Ford which is better then Chrysler or any other brand out there. How would everyone feel if the government decided that there will be just one brand of camera, or one brand of car etc. It would be a pretty boring life - I'd say.
