I'm using a Canon 7D. I'm trying to freeze the action, setting the shutter speed at 1000 and ISO at 400. For some reason the shutter speed goes back to 250 and I'm not getting the shot I need. What am I doing wrong?

Are you using a flash? I thought I remember reading on here that it will default to 250 if you are using a flash.

Set it to P, so that the on-body flash doesn't pop up automatically. Then, you'll be able to use shutter speeds higher than 250.

Is your camera set to AV apatite priority
If it is it will allow the camera to pick the shutter speed

Depends on what lens your using and how much light there is. If you need a shutter speed of 1000, set your camera to TV mode (shuuter priority). IF you have fast glass, set your camera to AV mode (aperture priority) and let the camera choose the shutter speed. If theres not enough light to achieve the shutter speed your desire, try bumping your ISO up. If your using a lens with an aperture of 4.5-5.6, A fast shutter speed may not work without a whole bunch of light. It sounds like your in (auto mode on your camera. This lets the camera pick the shutter speed and aperture. (not good for sports).

Thanks to everyone for your help. I'm using TV mode and there's plenty of light. I'll try AV or P mode and see what happens. Thanks again!

For the best results set your camera on manual. This way the camera will do nothing and you are in control. By putting yourself in the driver seat it will make you a much better photographer. Take control and be the boss, dont let your camera make the decisions.

Here are a few I shot this past season. The first was shot at 75mm, 1/515s, f8, ISO 160. The second was shot at 250mm, 1/1000s, f6.3, ISO 400. the third was 155mm, 1/400s, f8, ISO 400. If at all possible I like to keep my ISO at 400 or less................

Interesting problem..

In Tv, your camera should not attempt to sync to flash speed (1/250) unless you tell it to..

I suspect there is a custom function or setting you have turned on. :?
