I used this lens for the first time to see if it met my quality standards. I used good technique by mounting it on a tripod with Wimberley head. Used about ISO 800 or a little less for most, and eye detection focus. The lens proved itself worthy to me and I will use it often. So nice to have a good zoom when I had been using the 600mm f/4 most of the time. And in the 1.6 crop mode of the Canon R5, it has the field of view of 800mm and with all the pixels in the sensor, that still gives fine quality. These were all made this March 18 morning at Bannworth pond in Mission, TX. All images made with the 100-500mm to see how sharp it was and how well it worked. It was a excellent to use in my opinion.

Is there any advantage of using the crop sensor mode versus just cropping your images?

No extender. I tend to avoid extenders if possible, plus I don't have any for the RF lenses.
