Pen Tablet for PP

I've been using LR Cloud for a few years for PP, and sometimes I still use my old standby, Picasa for a tweak or two. A photographer friend has recommended I up my game a little by using a Pen Tablet, specifically the Wacom PTH660. He creates some amazing images using that particular tablet & pen so I'm considering taking the plunge also. I'd appreciate input from my brother & sister Hogs concerning your experiences, pro and con, with this or similar gear.

It will take a bit of practice to coordinate what you want to have happen and what actually does happen.

Thanks. My friend said that, as well, and added that frustration can abound from time to time.

I use a Huion pen tablet but not lisen to the advices I bought a huge table like the PTH 660 and I must reduce the working area, because going forward and backward with the pen I ended with my right arm distroyed. Then my advice is that the pen tablet helps a lot when you use the brush or making a selection but believe me, buy a small version of Wacon.

I use a Wacom and it is better but it does take practice. Caveat. The new C1 keyboard shortcuts mitigates it usefulness somewhat. More interesting are dedicated editing keyboards, epensive

As others have said, it takes practice to use a tablet successfully. It was suggested to me to put away your mouse and use the tablet exclusively. Also, there are practice sheets to help your coordination. I don’t have the link for those anymore but you can probably google some.

Personally, I couldn’t get used to using the tablet exclusively; but I do use it for fine editing my pictures in Photoshop.

Hope this helps.

I agree!! I originally bought the large Wacom and exchanged it for a smaller one. Much better (for me).

Another vote for Wacom. Mine has a set of buttons you can program with PS shortcuts. Very convenient.

My first Wacom tablet was the large one. Big mistake. Your arm will rack up many miles moving from one end to the other. Down graded to the medium size tablet. Still too big. You can reduce the work area of the tablet to reduce the distance your hand will travel. My next Wacom will be the smallest one they make. Go big or go home! Not when it comes to tablets. Go small.

I had wanted the Wagon intuos pro medium. For xmass my son gave me the intuos CTL6100. It seemed small at first but now I see why as others stated go smaller. This unit measures 8x10 and working area is a little smaller. It took some time to coordinate the eye hand. Again as others stated , try to use it always as opposed to mouse to speed up your coordination. Once you get comfortable your results will increase. I love it now. It's just a larger glide screen. I'm able to do some very fine edits , much more control than with my rolling ball mouse. It's my maint tool in lightroom.

I have set my Wacom so that for general use I only use a small area of the tablet but for fine photo-processing I use the whole tablet area. This works for me.

I use a smaller area, but the overall size of the tablet is just a personal preference.

I actually use the Wacom pen left handed and mouse right handed at exactly the same time and have found it to be the perfect combination. Takes time to work out lifting the pen from tablet so it doesn’t confuse the mouse. Yes I’m left handed, aren’t most creative people? 😜
