I just discovered this forum today, looks like a lot of fun. I'm brand new to the world of slrs, recently purchased a Sony a55; started with the HX1 two years ago and decided to take the plunge; looking forward to sharing ideas and photos.
Welcome to the site......it can get crowded but feel free to ask anything.

Hello and welcome to the forum!

Good Luck ! 8-)
Thanks for the welcome; the world of lenses (sp?) is brand new to me, I'll probably have a few (okay, alot) of questions.
We can learn together since I recently bought a Sony a55 :)
I have been shooting Nikon for awhile but I bought that same camera for my daughter this year.... You'll be very happy with it. read the manual while holding the camera and try everything.
I have two Sony SLR, the reason Minolta Maxxum lenses... Millions made, both by Minolta and by other makers. The history of these old lenses is interesting Zeis and Leica both used Minolta glass works to produce lenses and worked with them... those two are the classic big guys in German Lenses. So search and Minolta AF lenses will fit.
I have some old M42 screw lenses. One is 40 years old. With a M42 to Minolta adapter ($12 on Ebay) has a fooler to make the Alpha think there is a lens. Switch to Manual Focus and wala,, another lens. I got this for tubes for Macro.
Another thing is the Hot Shoe Adapter. Ebay for $8 allows you to use any flash.
I would buy a pack of Minolta lens bottoms in case you find lenses without them.
Water proof camera bag. $1 on Ebay
Remote Control for shooting.... $2 Ebay.
These are the thing I ordered for my two.. a 230 and a 330. Fine for shooting weddings and I got them Refurbished.. the 230 was 285 The sony lens is worth 200! so the body was very low cost.
Best of regards Don d/p
Thanks for all the info, nice to hear from Sony users. I'm the only Sony fan in my camera club. Any suggestions on a decent zoom, that won't break the bank? Right now, tho, I've only had it 3 days so I'm still getting familiar with the different features.
Only suggestion, look on Ebay and Amazon for a Minolta. I am not sure about the others. I ordered a MACRO 28-80 mm by sigma ($30) and while it is OK, unsure of quality image, but it is very light weight compared the the Minolta Maxxum.
Only Sony fan, yep, know the feeling, but people are polite in my club MYTBCC.com like I am mentally imbalanced or I too would have a Canon or Nikon. One of my favorite cartoon from too many years ago, by Jules Feiffer, village voice, .... court yard of afflicted people who were watching fire eaters, hell fire preachers, and on a third soap box, being totally ignored is a man holding a medical bag, who is saying, but I can save you! So it is with you and I and Sony. Similar feeling when I owned a 48 starlite coupe in Highschool. The ford and chev guys looked down their noses at me... they drove cars that had not changed since 1940, while i dove a protender of the future. Sony is award winning 2011, 2012 camera of the year. Canon and Nikon are great, surly, but will be playing catch up.
That is to funny; the club members are very nice and helpful, but sometimes I get the look..."poor thing, doesn't know"...I'll research Amazon and Ebay so I'll be ready when it's time to order. thanks.

Welcome aboard...I'm also new to the Sont slr world with my new A55.
You might also enjoy David busch's book specifically for the A55/A33 which far supplants the Sony Manual with many color shots of buttons, screens, pics, etc.
It's been a godsend as I try to teach this old dog new tricks
Welcome to the site. A lot of good information here. I recently purchased the sony A65. Not a lot of sony users on the site so we need to band together
