Does anyone know where I can get information on how to use this camera? I've read the manual but it does not help in showing me how to program in any of the settings. Also, when I try to read the menu from the view finder it is very blurry. No, it isn't my eyes. What am I doing wrong?

Hey Doc ..... on the side of the view finder you'll find a diopter adjustment ..... while viewing any camera info in the viewfinder adjust the diopter so it is clear for you ..... just turn that little knob

Go to Manualsink.com . I brought a 8 x 11 manual for my 40 and it has large print and much easier to understand the camera...

The main problem with any camera is that the orginal manual is translated from (usually) Japenese into English and a lot is lost..

Thanks for the suggestion. The print is not the problem. Lack of is the problem. The manuel talks about shooting in auto but doesn't get into anything else. I think, tho, my problem is solved. I can now read the menu thanks for Wabbit's suggestion. I'm going to go out and takes some photos. If I get any good ones I'll post. Thank you again for your response. What would I do without you guys? :)

Hey Doc ..... I think you'll find that using Shutter Priority (TV) will be be the one you'll use most. 1/400 usually stops most moving objects but sometimes you want some blur so you can change the shutter speed accordingly .....

I never use automatic ISO. If the camera can't get an exposure I raise the ISO until it can ..... any picture is better than No picture

If you're confused just ask for help

I always use the LCD on my SX40 for menu selections, settings, etc as it is much easier to read and there are SOME settings that cannot be changed when using the viewfinder.. I believe that they operate in a very similar fashion.

If you are using the little manual that came with the camera it is totally insufficient. It is best to download the full and complete manual that is in the software that you got with it.

Totally agree with this! The PDF on the CD gives a LOT more info!
Also check at ShortCourses.com --not sure they have the SX50 yet, but when they do it is well worth the cost ($20 for my SX40 manual).

Don't feel bad - I had the same problem when I got my SX40 a couple months ago. Ended up calling Canon tech help for the answer!

I'm curious - does the SX50 have socket for a cable shutter release? That's one thing I wish the SX40 had, and I recall several past UHH posters also missed that feature on their SX40s. Thanks.

If you download and use CHDK, you can use a remote release. The main site for CHDK has links to instructions for building one or buying one that is compatible with CHDK and uses the USB connection on the camera.

Please let me know how you like the camera once you get going with it.
My wife has the sx40 and I have the nikon p510 along with a couple of dslr's, but I'm considering trading the 510 in for the sx50
