What do you think of this lens for general use?

This lens is the absolute best general use lens ever made.
I got mine for Nikon when they first came out. After tuning, I am getting good results with it and plan to keep it. I have have used it for wildlife / birding, but there is better glass out there for that purpose. The 18-400mm is more of a walk around lens and it’s light, compact, very versatile, AF works well on my D7200 and D500, and VR performs well. It does have a couple of quirks, like the focus ring (thin ring near the front of the lens) turns when the camera is auto focusing. The only real drawback is that it is not a very fast lens, so I usually take a 50mm f/1.4 along for those lower light indoor shots.
The 18-400 is like an EF-S, NOT EF. It is for APS-C cameras ONLY. It will probably mount a full frame body unlike Canon brand EF-S lenses, but will vignette, at least at the lower focal lengths, if not most.

Excellent all around lens that stays on my wife's camera. Thousands of shots including everything from cactus to Bison in Yellowstone! Nikon version.
I love my 18-400 as a travel/walk around but it is not a EF lens (Full frame) it is for EF-S (Crop Sensor) cameras

General use,,,,,,,,,,yes. Professional use,,,,,,,,,,,,,no. Should you own one?..............probably. Good multi-use lens to take on vacation.
I got this lens when it first came out. Maybe I was lucky enough to get one of the best ones Tamron made. It is the best walk around lens I have ever had. It is light and never leaves my Nikon D500.
I just bought the Canon version and am anxious to get out and start shooting with it. I plan on keeping it on my 90D pretty much full time.
I bought it when it was introduced after reading an independent review. It is attached to my Nikon D7100 probably 90% of the time. No regrets.

For very "general" use it is OK - especially travel and judicious PP can help. For more critical work on a budget, I would prefer the Sigma 17-70 and Tamron 100-400 together.....as a tandom
.

I got mine for my Canon 90D when I was going on safari in South Africa (see my SA posts). It performed admirably and I am very pleased with it.
I wouldn't use it for "walking around" because I don't think that's what it's intended for. But it is good for wildlife, for sure.
What they said. Love mine almost always on my D7100

They are cheaply made of all plastic, and you'll see a lot of CA (chromic aberration).
I used mine on a Nikon d7100 (crop) as my walk around lens in Paris, Africa and South America as well as the US. I never did professional shots or large print shots but it worked perfectly for my purposes which involves sending it over the internet and including the pictures in stories I write. The only lens I added to it was a 50mm 1.4 because the low light capabilities of both the lens and camera were very limited. The 50mm really made up for it--some of my best shots were in a dark Mosque in Morocco. Also, the 50mm was not that expensive and it was very easy to carry.
like others have pointed out--you need to think about your camera body and what you like to shoot on vacation and that may guide you but I was very happy with the 18-400.
