4x6 prints on the fly...

Need help with set up for taking 4x6 300 dpi from my 50D Canon to a Canon printer using their print/pix software and by-passing the laptop. I need to print 4x6 images in real time at a golf tourney, and hand the prints to the golfers in a matter of minutes. About 250 images will be taken in the short period of time. Any suggestions?

We do something similar (group photos), but we have a Sony dye-sub printer (UP-DR 150). 8 seconds per print. And we use a laptop. Group photos are taken on the course, cards are brought in, downloaded and prints done before they come in.

What printer are you planning to use?
What you are able to do will depend on the software and how slow the printer is.

Are you going to be out on the course doing this?

Thanx for the quick response. I will be using 2 Canon iX6520 printers.
I will have support help bringing cf cards to the printer and delivering the photos at the dinner. I need the expediency for the dinner shots, (aka booth shots). Take 25 photos and print within 20 minutes, and repeat many times.
I do not want to involve my lap top for any PS post work.
How will the image from a15MPX Canon D50, auto to 4x6 at high res, i.e. 300dpi. Will the printer set these values, or can I set the camera to do this?

We do no PP of images, just view and pick our photos in ACDSee Pro 5 on the laptop, hit print and tell the printer how many. We can print from raw or jpeg- doesn't seem to matter.
I'm sure the printer will interpolate the size to print 4x6.
Canon says it is capable of 37 sec for each 4 x6 print.
That would seem like forever to me.
Having two printers will definitely help speed things up.
The printer does have a card reader on board, right?

We used to rent the Sony printer but the company in Dallas no longer does that, so we bought one.
You can get a refurb for about $750.
If you do a lot of this stuff, something like that is the way to go.

Yes two donated printers and two readers.
Is there a way to go from camera to(CF card) to the printer and get the desired out put 4x6 300dpi withou the lap top in between. I use Bridge and PS o post work every image I take... that's not the issue. I would like this to be without the laptop and PS.

That I don't know. I'm assuming you don't have the printers to play with yet. If they don't have a built in reader, I'm guessing you'll have to use a laptop. I'm not a tech guy though and hope some one can come up with a solution for you.

We used a printer that had it's own card reader and small monitor and so much prefer having the laptop to edit, meaning picking out the good frame, and then que them for printing. Plus we could store the photos there. We have no time for dinking around with Photoshop.

Personally, I would not try to do this with printers as slow as you are attempting to use; but I'm spolied.

50D will print 4x6 straight out of camera no cropping needed. Test this by taking shot , put in PS and do a crop to a 4x6 and the check image size and res. I have a 50D and they will print a 20x30 and 4x6 straight out of camera.

Take a printer with a screen that prints out at 300dpi & accepts the card you are using and you should be all set. Make sure there is power available. and have several cards to work from.

Is that the key??? Use a printer with a screen to set the 4x6 @ 300dpi?

You shouldn't have to resize anything to get a 4x6.
Should print straight of the card.
You will tell the printer what size to print somewhere on the menu.

Thanx for your help. You were right on target. I went over to Best Buy and checked out two different printers. Both can opoerate right from the CF Card taken from the camera. Both test were very close in print quality.
Epson Artisan #837 & the Canon MG6220. Both had a user inerface where I crop and fill the 4x6" print size.
My interest is only to print 4x6" hi-gloss images on the spot as golfers move from hole to hole. Total time required about 5 minutes per foursome golfers.
Also the cost of ink per image is critical as they both hold 6 cartridges of costly re-fills.
If anyone can add some additional insight I would appreciate it very much. Thanx...Irve

I'd be interested to know how it goes.

For the Epson: "brilliant 4" x 6" photos in as fast as 10 seconds" -that's in draft mode- not photo quality.
Canon says 20 sec for a 4x6.
Would be interested to hear what your findings are and what the quality is like- I'm in the market for another printer. My Epson dies recently.

BTW, the Sony dye-sub printer media cost for a 4x6 is a about 20 cents per print. There is no ink.

Good luck!

With a lot of pix to print, I suggest you look into a continuous inking system. Check them out at Inkproducts.com to see if they have a system for your model printer.
