My Dell Vostro 1500 laptop from March 2008 now has a very dark display. Nothing I've done makes it any brighter, so I guess it's time to retire it. Thirteen years was a pretty good run. It cost me $53 a year. Not bad.

I had a refurbished Dell last somewhere over 10 years.
Then the "edge of night" crept in.....

Most likely the fluorescent backlight tube - that’s what typically has happened to my old Dell laptops, but they do last a long time. You can always use it with an external monitor, but you have so MANY computers, you probably don’t need it

If it's bright when plugged in and dims when on battery power (which may or may not be normal depending on your power settings) Try removing the battery and plugging it in. If it's bright, it needs a new battery. Have had that happen on 2 laptops and all resulted in the same thing, New batteries...

"Need" is an odd word. I tend to substitute want."

I don't think it's worth going to the trouble of hooking up an external monitor. Then it would just be another desktop.

Two days ago I retired my HP Pavillion laptop that I got sometime in '04. It's still functional but painfully slow. I just hope this new Lenovo gives as good of service.

I have both a Dell desktop and a Dell laptop that are now 11 years old. Both (knock on wood) are still running well without issues.

My Dad always told me is that most people do not understand the difference between "need" and "want" we all want a lot of things but we could be OK with the things we need.

Depending on how much you used it, I'd say you got your $ worth. I have a Dell studio for 11 years this month. Still works. Slow as S#*t, but it works.
