You caught some incredible shots, maybe in a lifetime. Opportunities like this do not come around very often.

Isn’t Canyonlands in Utah?

There are several subspecies of Bighorn: Rocky Mountain and Desert being two. I don’t know all the differences but believe Rocky Mountain is larger.

Here’s a Desert one I shot in Death Valley in December.

Thank you very very much, Canyon land is in Utah. The Desert Bighorn is not so social and weighs a lot more. Nice picture.

Really nice, Mike. You caught a rare opportunity and it came out well. That last one is quite the portrait of an older bighorn ram. No wonder they used it. Thanks for sharing, and have a great day.

I believe you meant the Rocky Mountain is the larger one.

I see plenty of them due to my travel and outdoor time. The Rocky Mountain, which we have in Idaho, appear to me to me to be much larger than the Desert ones I see in NV, Utah, and AZ. There is also a relatively small Sierra brand.

I usually see ewes in groups around a half dozen or so. Rams are more often solitary ( as my one in Death Valley), but I sometimes see three or four rams together; most recently in Valley of Fire, NV.

As a side note when looking around for info I found that native Americans made bows from the horns. They were highly prized as more springy than wood bows.

I can see why they used it. Great tack sharp with beautiful colors. Well done.

I was searching inside Canyonsland N.P. when I spotted this creature. I took some shots as I was under the assumption they are plenty full. In the evening on the way out I was going the Park Ranger going to show my new just came out Nikon 2DX. The Ranger was more amazed at the Big Horn Sheep. I had no idea they were so hard to find. The last image was used by the Parks Department in the yearly publication.

Great pictures.

We ran into a small herd of bighorn sheep in Canyonlands while hiking the Syncline trail. But they stayed about 50-100 yds aways from us. I literally walked right up to bighorn sheep while hiking in Glacier NP. He was eating as I walked up, looked up at me and went back to eating. I was about 10 ft away from him. As I watched him, I slowly move behind a tree right next to me just in case he decided to head butt me. He didn't seem to mind me being there. Usually just see them from a distance, though. Magnificent animals and beautiful captures.
