Hello, my name is Matt, I am curious if someone can tell me what is the best DSLR for general use?
The best camera always seems to be the one you can't afford. How much do you want to spend is a good way to start the discussion. When considering your budget, you need to address a general purpose lens too, such as one that covers say 18-135mm for a cropped sensor or say 24-105mm for a full-frame lens.
Matt, I see that you have been a member since 2011. You need to do some personal research and reflection on this. Search this forum as well as dpreviews and a lot of other sites to get informed on the various cameras, brands, etc. No one on this site an answer such a broad question. I believe there was a similar question posed the other day on this forum and someone provided quite a few links to help the OP the decision.

No such thing. They're all good for something. You need to determine what is best for you. The same rules apply to dating. There is no value in getting a generic match - you need to check them out and see if they work for you. Or hiking boots - there are some amazing footwear, but you'd better check them out before committing $$ - at least if you don't want blisters.
Without knowing your needs or budget, one of the members is selling a Nikon D850.

What are your needs?
What will you use it for? (What's "general use"?)
What's your budget?
I'm thinking Canon 5d Mark lV, with an additional long lens. Any comments?

I think it's a good choice. I don't think you can go wrong with it.
Maybe the 24-105 zoom and then see how much you may want to go above 105mm in the future.
I see Nikon has several which are rated higher, should I be looking at those?

You can.
I'd offer no opinions on Nikon, other than they are great cameras also. I've never owned one.
Image-wise you won't be disappointed by Canon, Nikon, Sony, and a few others.
(But you'll find that 90% of the people here will tell you to buy what they have. You know, the cat's meow camera.)
If you can, I'd seriously recommend going to a store and HOLDing one (each) to see if it feels right, is comfortable, and the controls are nicely accessible for you.
If you're planning to buy new, you'd better served with Canon's newest R5 or R6 mirrorless cameras. The top DSLRs from both Canon and Nikon are great, but have all been out for a while as well as likely being their final DSLR interactions. Don't spend new money on an old camera. Find one you like with the lenses you like and buy as much as possible in a lightly used condition.

Great camera in my opinion, not claiming expert status. So you have decided on dslr vs. Mirrorless? You have decided on full frame vs. crop camera? What will you be shooting?
Thank You good ideas all.

The best camera you have is just that....the one you have. Don’t settle for less.
