gmail has greatly shortened my contact list, and has left out some who I contact daily. Then, it suggests some who I almost never contact. Anyone have the same problem and know how to fix this?

Funny that you mention that. My mail has been shorter than usual. After investigation I find that people and organizations that I email all the time for years has suddenly became spam. I haven't checked my contacts but when I get home I will
Whether or not your suspicions turn out to be true, the answer is to use your own mail client such as Outlook, which can download/upload your messages from Gmail and keep all your messages and contacts locally.

I use Thunderbird and the Comcast client. I don't use Gmail.
find a better email provider ;-). Seriously, Gmail is for those who want their data scrubbed and manipulated by Alphabet (Google's parent). Google is the most aggressive and invasive. Suggest you go to something like outlook.com or msn.com, (mine for 10+years). just sayin'

I use Thunderbird email client on my computer. Gmail is my service provider.
Gmail provides its own spam filter leveraging Google's world leading AI. On top of that I have defined spam filters in Thunderbird. The combination has worked to reduce my daily inbox to an easily manageable size.
I have not had any problems with my contact lists being tampered with. Part of the reason could be that I am a bleeding heart liberal, and have several shirts with blood stains on the left pocket area as proof :-D
(The fact that Thunderbird manages my contact list, not Gmail, also helps :-D )

I don’t use gmail either, and I hate web based mail clients. With Outlook, I can look back 20 years and search for a key word (in any context - sent, received, subject or embedded in the text) in a second. I can’t tell you how useful that is if I want to know some obscure detail (such as the paint color on my house) from ten years ago. AND, I have ALL my emails backed up locally regardless of what provider or email address I use.

I have nothing in my in-box, nothing in my out-box, five pending receiving a reply, A dozen e-receipts, and maybe a dozen or three emails archived. Never said "Dang, I wish I kept that email from 15 years ago.". Never needed them.
Paint color, when what was repaired/replaced/installed for the house and cars is in a spreadsheet.
