Hi guys I am looking at getting a canon 50mm prime lens but I don't know if I should get the f1.8 at £99 or pay the extra and get the f1.4 at £240
Your thoughts please
Joe.

There is no question that the 1.4 is superior than the 1.8... The 1.8 IS good... The 1.4 is SUPERB !

Absolutely, the 1.4!
When I did photos for a living I always wanted equipment (and hopefully talent) that would put me ahead of the competition, and the 1.4 50mm lens is one of those pieces of equipment.

How often will you use the normal lens?

The f/1.8 is called the "nifty fifty" in Yankville, and the nifty fifty is thrifty. And then one can find the f/1 on Ebay. Lots of pound sterling.

I own the Canon 60mm f/2.8 Macro, and seldom use my 50. Just another consideration.

I know nothing about Canon lenses, so I would recommend reading reviews. Although the F/1.4 is better for low light, the difference is only 2/3 stop. Is that worth the difference in cost?

Just got the 1.4 and it is really a sharp lens. Have it mounted almost exclusively on my camera . Spend the extra cash ... you usually get what you pay for .

Interesting. I just checked out ken Rockwell. He prefers the 1.8 0ver the 1.4 because of better focusing.

If you have the money, buy the 1.4
Much higher build quality.
