The only Navy plane I have ever been close to is the F4F they have on display in the Chicago airport. I was fascinated by it. Back in the 60's while I was in college I happened to drive along the tracks in Provo, Utah and saw a Corsair behind a fence. It wasn't in very good shape and I assume that it was shipped somewhere and was restored.

I love the WW-II warbirds. Of course the P-51 is my favorite.
My father flew as a combat photographer and tail-gunner with the 1st and 2nd Marine Air Wings all over the South Pacific, including Guadalcanal and Solomon Islands. He actually knew Maj. Pappy Boyington, leader of the infamous Black Sheep squadron, one of the best units flying the F4U Corsair.
A number of pilots were reluctant to take a photographer up with them on missions because they wanted a back-seater who could protect them. Dad had to qualify as a tail-gunner and on many missions he shot both film and ammunition. He had a life-long respect for the Corsair, as did Japanese pilots who equated the distinctive sound of the F4U with death. Thanks for post, Steve.

A tailhook prop job in its glory. Thanks.
