Reading an article on Outdoor Photography on Novoflex lens adapters. I searched the archives and couldn't find anything related that address the adapting of Medium format lenses to a DSLR. What are the advantages/disadantges? I'm specifically looking to adapt Mamiya 645 lenses to a Nikon. Novoflex does list this adapter combination.

Medium format lenses conform to a different technical standard relative to potential focus quality as compared to smaller format (35mm/DSLR) lenses, which, due to the smaller image size, have to resolve to a finer level. Medium format enjoys the real estate of the larger image area, and it is the physical size which aids medium format images in looking better than 35mm. It has to do with being able to provide more information for the given detail area, or merely an area of tone. 35mm DSLRs, by virtue of the format itself, will never equal medium format, nor large format.

Only the finest medium format lenses, essentially Zeiss lenses like those found on Hassselblads, would stand a chance in 35mm/DSLR work.

I had a pro lab for years, and the difference between Mamiya and Hasselblad is rather large, quality size, across the board. Zeiss simply rules in medium format, although some Zeiss lenses are not as good as they would like, the principle example being the 150mm f/4 Sonnar, of which, there are really, really sharp ones, but there's almost a 50/50 shot of getting a soft one.

I regularly shoot with either my Zeiss 80mm f2.8 or 50mm f4 on my Nikon D700. I get great results and very good looking images.
