Canon 5d mirror repair

Mine just fell out. No damage. Looked at YouTube repair, but thought I would check with everyone here before attempting it myself.

Just 4 spots of superglue on the dark areas to reattach the mirror, right?

I would take it to a local repair shop or send into Canon. If you send to Canon you will get it back fully refurbished and calibrated

Alas, if we're talking about the original EOS 5D, Canon typically will not perform repairs after 5ish years after the model is discontinued, such as 5-years beyond the 2008 end of this model.

Now you have a mirrorless camera.

Hi, Mirror falling out of the original 5D was a known fault and happened to me. Canon repaired and made small modifications to beef up and returned camera to me all for free. Suggest you contact them as my experience was about 4 years ago.
Cheers and good luck

That's what happened during my photo workshop trip in Oregon. Went to a Canon camera shop. He said there had been a recall. Unfortunately, it hadn't reach me. So, given I was from the east coast and he said it would take four days to repair correctly, and I didn't have four days, he glued it for me. Worked fine after that!

Canon no longer services this camera.

I do not know how long you had the camera but I remember the recall because of the mirror falling off. I had mine repaired free of charge. That was a long time ago and CHG_CANON is correct that it is too late for that model.

Thanks all.

I'll do the superglue thing this weekend.

Over and out

DON'T USE SUPER GLUE. It foggs and destroys the mirror surface. Go to Autozone and get some Permatex Ultra Black adhesive. Use a pin to apply a very small amount in the same place as the old glue, gently set the mirror in the frame without smearing the glue and let it set overnight. I do these for a living and this is the best solution to the 5d / mirror problem. It's common and Canon no longer services any of the 5D series cameras.

Thanks for the tip. Sounds like you know what you’re doing. I’ll do that.

There are 4 black spots. I suppose that is where I put the black adhesive.

I don’t understand why the black sheet is attached only to one edge of the mirror.

Maybe I could send you some pictures first Could I get your phone number? Mine is 704-617-0691.

Yes. The adhesive goes on the 4 little spots and be sure to get the little black sheet back in place. It's a see through mirror and part of it needs to be blacked out.

I don’t understand why the black sheet is attached to the mirr along only one edge. It probably makes no difference since it is under the mirror and the mirror is attached to the plastic base.

Should I send you pictures?

As happened to others, the mirror fell out of mine also. I never heard about the recall until I was researching the problem online--which was, of course, about a week after the recall period had ended. Decided to call Canon repair anyway to see what they would suggest, and they told me to send it in anyway and they would honor the recall so long as they still had the parts. Obviously this was several years ago, but it might be worth calling them just to see what they say. Mine came back good as new.
