I winter in Harlingen - just north of Brownsville. The 2 best places near here that I’ve found are South Padre Island (the bird sanctuary) and here in Harlingen at the Hugh Ramsey nature center - a wide variety of birds. Hugh Ramsey park has bird blinds set up.

P.S. It’s 72 degrees here this morning at 8:00 AM

Thanks so much for the maps. It seems south Texas and the coastline is loaded with birds. I suspect it is the perfect place for me to wait out the six months of snow at my home. Of course, my summers are tremendous!

A little inland, La Lomita Photography Ranch is a very nice place. Near Uvalde, TX it is less expensive than Laguna Seca and Santa Clara, but with some nice set ups. You also get a few different birds coming. During the spring there are flowering plants in the BG that offer some significant changes to how your shots look. Less crowded and little off the beaten path, my wife and I enjoyed it greatly. The other spots you described are all great, but because they are set up for birdwatching more than bird photography, have all the limitations you would expect, especially backgrounds.

Hi All,

I have been hiding out at home near West Yellowstone photographing birds in my yard. I had a few common redpolls, one hairy woodpecker that like to "remodel" my wood home, and huge flocks of black-capped and mountain chickadees. I begin two weeks of leading photo tours in Yellowstone and then I am going to Texas for a couple of months. (They tell me there is less snow in south Texas-sounds good to me after enduring it for three months already).

I have never photographed along the Texas coastline, so I would appreciate hearing about any sites where there are lots of birds that can be approached with full-frame 840mm range. I do know of some of them. I am teaching bird photography at Laguna Seca and know about Smith Oaks Rookery, Bolivar Flats, Brazos Bend State Park, Anahuac NWR, Leona Turnbull Birding Center, Paradise Pond, Estero Llano Grande State Park, Bentsen Rio Grande State Park, and South Padre Island Birding Center. Can anyone offer more sites where lots of birds can be photographed well in Texas? Thanks for anything you can offer.

By the way, I bought the Canon R5 in October and used it for all the photos you see here. Indeed, I have only used the R5 since I got it, and my Canon 1DX Mark III is patiently waiting to be used again-not sure that will happen. Also, I am selling all of my shorter Canon zoom lenses as I have replaced them with the Canon RF lenses that now cover everything from 15mm to 500mm. You can probably tell what I think of the R5-it is a huge game-changer!!!!!! And when the rumoured R1 comes out sometime this year---whoa! Again, thanks for any help you can offer on Texas. I have a need to photograph far more birds in warmer weather-and Texas sounds like the spot to do that!
Hi All, br br I have been hiding out at home near... (show quote)

Hi John, In addition to your list, add San Bernard NWR and Brazoria NWR, both just south of Houston.

And at Smith Oaks there is a new raised boardwalk. I have not seen it yet, but I plan to go to Smith Oaks soon. Courtship for egrets starts in February. Do not forget to go to SOR for flyins at night. From the new boardwalk this ought to be even better.

In Galveston, San Louis Pass and Sportsman road. And sunrise at east beach.

Google Featherfest 2021 or 2019 and see where all of the birding events were held.

Two commercial ranches that I know of that are specifically geared to bird photography are the Laguna Seca Ranch, a bird photography ranch, 700 acres near Edinburg and the 300 acre Santa Clara Ranch in Starr County. Both ranches have in ground and above ground blinds. You might also try to contact Wyman Meinzer, "The Official Photographer of Texas" for advice. South Texas has birds you won't see most anywhere else, the green jay, perhaps the chachalaca. and of course the crested caracara which has now moved much farther north. I know the ranches only by reputation but you have put a bee in my bonnet. Maybe after my second Covid vaccination and before it gets too hot I'll check them out.

I too am waiting for my second Covid shot before I start going out with people present. I have been to both Santa Clara and Laguna Seca. I try and visit both on my trip to the Valley from Houston.

If you happen to be in S texas during spring (bird) migration and get a "fallout" the boardwalk at the convention center on S padre can be wonderful. A 300mm lens is all you need for those small warblers as they are so hungry they tolerate humans.

Galveston has a bird festival we attended a couple of years ago. It was in the spring and they had lectures and field trips with professional photographers and guides. Had a great time.

Great article on sharp shooting. I recently got a Canon R6 with 100-500 RF and the 800 f11 lens. I am just amazed at how many more keepers I can get with the eye detect and tracking, its magic! I'm also amazed at what you can get with the 800 f11, it has compromises, but it takes great pictures and cost $899, weighs 2.77 lbs. IBIS combined with lens stabilization is great. Hand holdable in crazy situations. Its a new world!

Thanks everyone for your help. I leave West Yellowstone today and drive to South Texas! Can't wait to see the birds!
