Haha, I put mine out in the garage so I can listen to music from my Prime playlists while making beer. She gets lonely out there without anyone to talk to on a regular basis.
You better talk to her some, or she might drink the beer, I hear they have a long straw......

Smart appliances open the doorway!!!
On plant trips we take, we are asked to turn off gps tagging of photos. You post a photo and then people use the tags to go dig up the plants!
If not now, in the near future, anyone will be able to track, at least where you have been, by searching existing photos on the web, using a photo you may post. I purchased a bunch of optical materials including motor controllers. Much of it, one knows what it is, but no exact specs. I have had some luck using image searching as even older stuff is still available for sale and images are there to be matched.

It is attached to a light pole in an apartment complex. The spinning mechanism must be powering something. A timer perhaps?
Some of these have a rain gauge in the box

Maybe they have an agreement with a local TV/radio station or the weather service to gather info for the area.
Maybe they (somebody who runs the complex) likes weather stuff.
Maybe someone in the complex is a weather aficionado and asked if it was okay to put up.
It does not look like a cheap system.
You nailed it. It is a weather setup for nerds like me (I have something similar). The systems are available for usually under $200, if you watch Costco or go shopping online.
It is sort of tempting to get one of these things...but not from china. I was a weather weenie in the Air Force and at times it can be interesting to keep up with what's going on. Thing is...as a fireman I get all kinds of weather alerts from our Central and they are quite detailed and, of course, I've gone through two sessions of "emergency weather" for first responders. And usually when the good stuff is around I'm usually already in my truck, with my radio, and actively looking for the weather.

Come on people, it's nothing put up by the CIA or worse. I have one in my back yard. It's nothing more than a simple weather station.

Now you are just taking the fun out of messing with all the conspiracy theorists....
For many, I don't believe they care who is watching. I mean if you are willing to have an APP that tells you all the friends you have who have eaten at some store you just passed, etc. sho needs to spy on you. Using data such where you eat, the type of places, etc. along with friends data, one could get a pretty good idea of your location, wealth, health, political affilation, etc.
When I was young, people said things went on your permanent record, maybe not true then, but today the web is certainly close. Just look at the people losing jobs, college acceptances, etc. over a post from years ago. Do something stupid as a teenager and no telling how it will follow you.

Day old pizza (love the name), your answer makes sense, but why in an apartment complex? They simply rely on the rain itself to water the lawns, no sprinkler systems of any kind. And atmospheric pressure?
My wife has a weather adfiction and is as good or better than the weatherman at forecasting. It's a hobby for her just like photography is for some.
AndyT wrote:
Longshadow. That all makes sense, but why would those things be needed in an apartment complex. This is not something put up by somebody who lives here and is interested in the weather. Thoughts?
You kidding? We weather freaks love to collect our own weather data, make our own weather predictions and compare it all with the feds'. Been doing it for over 60 years.
