Unfortunately, the United States ranks #1 in Covid. I know some of you will blame this (rightfully so) on politicians, and this could get moved to The Attic, but we have to put a great deal of the blame where it belongs: on the population.

We are confronted with a deadly, contagious disease for which there is no cure. What do we do? We say it's a hoax. We don't restrict our activities because we don't want anything to impinge on our freedom. We travel hundreds of miles to meet friends and relatives. We refuse to wear masks. The result: the United States ranks #1 in Covid.

Locally, our numbers are increasing by about 100 a day, and the deaths are climbing faster, too. The 1918 flu lasted for about twenty-six months, and this one could surpass that.

Let’s try to keep this Thread out of the Attic. First, I must say we can be resilient when we are concerned with positive outcomes. We have established guidelines for being outside and in the company of others. Why are some people defiant of these guidelines. Many feel that this virus is not capable of harming them. There are multiple strains and one can become infected by a mild strain or a deadly strain. Why risk a crap shoot? Do I agree with the current distribution of the vaccine? NO! But that is what we must do in the interim.
That is why I used the word resilient when the virus is relentless.
Let us avoid blame storming. It will only result in hated of a few.

Please wear masks. Please social distance when possible. Please wash hands with soap and water.

Here is a lesson we can learn from our cats and dogs. These pets have been exposed to the virus. They have developed antibodies to the virus. While they have been in contact with the virus, they don’t harbor any ill will to their owner. We will beat this virus but we have to have a common ideology. PLEASE!

I am a staunch supporter of the medical and scientific community when it comes to the coronavirus response. I condemn the behavior of anti-maskers. And I think the government's handling of the pandemic and vaccine distribution has been all wrong.

However, articles like the one you linked to, and the way you presented it, don't help. The lead of section compares the US to other countries in terms of total cases. I've also seen this too often in news programs.

Using "total" numbers is meaningless, misleading and dishonest if you're using that statistic for purposes of comparison and as a measure of how well we're doing.

"Per capita" is the only valid measure for comparisons. The article eventually gets to per capita but why even bring up the total numbers? And lead off with them?

So you should have led off with "the United States ranks #9 in Covid."

Per capita cases (depends on testing) or per capita deaths (depends on coding criteria) also have data faults. We’re handling this poorly by any measure used.

I’m responding to your statement that “per capita” is the only valid measurement. There are flaws in that. The only measurement I look for now is the hospitalization trends.

Let’s hope there are fewer new hospitalizations due to Covid.

If you need to blame some group try the Chinese politicians.

As noted above claiming the US is number one is nonsense. Testing and reporting vary widely. The only somewhat reliable method is to compare total 2020 deaths to 2019 by country on per capita basis. I haven’t found that and even it is subject to political manipulation. But this clearly shows US is far from number 1.

Check your local VA hospital to see if they are giving shots to veterans. I did and my VA hospital gave me the shot the next day with a follow up date for my second shot.

This is a very sad and hard time for all. I spent over 3 weeks caring for my father who still has complications due to the virus, and I know what it can do. However, I can not wear a mask ....there is no way you can cover my nose and mouth at the same time without me having a panic attach in a millisecond....so for people that get upset because someone is not wearing a mask....please calm down...you have no clue what or why that person does not have a mask on.

I make sure to social distance when I do go out and have to be around people but I do not and can not wear the mask....I just can't do it. Hope this helps to make people understand that you never know what is going on in someone else's life and to not make hasty judgements.

Have you tried a bandanna style where your mouth is more open? Not the best defense, but better than nothing.

Can't do it, can't do the bandanna style, can't pull my shirt up over my mouth, even my snowmobile helmet is open faced for this reason....I was attacked when I was 13 and had tape and a hood put over my face....there is now way anything can go over my face....it just is not happening and never will.

Hopefully from my experience, people will understand that you have no clue what someone else has gone thru and why they are not wearing one....it's not always because they are stubborn, it's not always political....you just never know.

Cindy, I feel for you and others in your situation. I know and understand that some people cannot wear a mask. But I am guessing that you are a very small minority.

The anti-maskers I take issue with are the ones that preach opposition to masking based on some misguided notions of infringements on their personal rights and freedoms and their failure to accept that masks reduce germ transmissions.

Best wishes and take care...
