I made this Blue Bird nest box and carved a spirit face on it.

Very nice! Nothing so clever as yours, but we put up 5 Bluebird boxes last year and all were used. We have high hopes for Spring.

You should add a perch - dowel rod 2" below the opening.

I am not that creative I usually make firewood out of scrap lumber.

So I see their recommended plan for a Bluebird box - but there is no explanation for why there is no perch.
?? Can you provide enlightenment ??

Yes, but later. I can't recall where the explanation is and dinner prep is ongoing. Recollection is that it has to do with a particular preference of the species and limiting other birds usage.

I seem to remember it has to do with Bluebirds being small and light with good claw strength and are thus able to hang on rough surfaces or the edge of the hole to get in or out while larger/heavy birds and some others need and will use the perch. If they can fit through the hole they will take over from the Bluebirds.

Like hummingbird feeders without perches, the hummers will hover and others won't drink the nectar if they have no perch.

Search this - why no perches on blue bird nest boxes? - for several interesting specifics. Robert was right on the moneyl but there are more reasons as well.

Until I saw the bird, I thought this was a homemade camera with a large low # f stop.

I like the face carved on the front of the camera. Ooops, should have said "birdhouse."
