CFExpress Card Error on Canon R5
This is somewhat disappointing, I am getting card reading errors on my Canon R5, and yes, I have repeatedly formatted the card in camera and the errors persist, the camera will do fine with the card for a while and then start giving the errors. Don't know if it is the card or the camera, hoping another member can give me some pointers, of course the card is being returned, both the camera and card are brand new, had them for about 2 weeks.
I was not happy that Canon changed from the CF card to the CFExpress card but I understand for 8K video the older CF cards are not capable enough, but that is just one more expense you have to consider when buying new gear.
Anyway, I know that this camera is pretty new to the market and there are not a lot of owners out there but I am just wondering if anyone else is having a similar problem on their R5 or R6.
The r5 is on my list this year , will keep watch here . I certainly hope you find an answer
I bought a new 1DX MARK III of course it uses the CF Express. after a couple thousand shots the camera quit and froze I returned that Cf Express to Band H thinking that was the problem. I talked to Canon Professional services techs a couple of times. I bought a new larger card for $400 a couple of weeks later, while shooting the camera froze again. I mean every thing was stopped. no focus, etc. removing the card from the camera it started working normally. I moved the card from 2 to 1 I sent the camera back to Pro Service they couldn't find any thing wrong with the camera or the card. but they installed the upgrade software I haven't had problems yet. So go to their web site and install the new software update
I bit the bullet and bought a CFExpress card to fill the slot. But since I only shoot stills I haven’t taken it out of the camera. I just keep reformatting it each time I head out to shoot. And yes I was very disappointed at the added cost of the card and the special reader. I will be following this post to see if others have had any problems
I purchased CFast cards for my 1Dx2 in 2016. Now technology marches on to a newer card format. It’s just the nature of being on the leading edge. And the cost of CFast cards never really came down much.
I would make sure you have the latest firmware in your camera. These are basically computer systems with lenses...
Good Luck!
There have been some extensive threads at Fred Miranda and/or photographyonthenet about this issue. I think some of the older cards have some internal issues that don't play well with the R5. Also, the latest firmware update helped some. One fellow has done and posted links to a massive test he has done and a few cards just do not work well. Find those posts and you will get some answers. Due to me not doing video, I have drug my feet buying a CFast card for my R5.
I have updated the firmware, so that is not the issue, the card and camera are not playing well together, it is a Lexar, which is the brand I have always used for my CF cards and never had issues, but it was also a better deal than the other brands of CFexpress cards so maybe there is a reason it was less expensive than the others. I will ask Adorama for a return, they are too expensive to just say "Oh well.".

My issue with the R5 usiong a CFexpress card is related to the card over-heating when downloading from the reader to my iMac. I have a Lexar reader and am using a Sandisk 64gb CFe card. In just a minute or two of downloading, the card heats up so badly you can barely hold it between finger and thumb. My local b&m is researching the issue.
After reading a few threads on other sites I have to wonder if the R5 issue has something to do with the video settings on the camera. Nobody said that but what I did notice is that most of the complaints came from people shooting video, for some their camera would actually lock up, I don't do video but the problem occurred after I set the camera to 8K video, I was thinking that I wanted to see what all the hoopla was about even though I did not take any video I did change camera settings and it was after that that the problem surfaced.
I have changed the video settings back to 4K/60, it will take time to see if it made any difference .
Processing video takes a lot of computing power. I know people that use phones to live stream drag racing and the phones will often overheat...especially in hot weather. It may be an issue of the camera not being able to cool itself fast enough...

Like I said, I have not recorded video, it is my suspicion, and that is all it is, that simply selecting the 8K video caused the camera to reject the card, I have no reason to say that other than some of threads I read on other sites seemed to discuss similar problems with recording video with this camera. There are certain cards that Canon says are compatible with filming 8K video and I did not see any 64gb card on the list.
I am using a Sony Tough CFEXpress 128 GB, 1700/1480 R/W in my R5 with no trouble (yet). Am running the latest firmware. I download direct from camera to my iMac via the USB 3 cable that came with camera. All good here.

What happened when you tried a different CFExpress card?
