I hope that someone has first hand experience with this. I am considering buying a LUMIX G Macro 30mm fixed focal length lens, to use with my Olympus camera body. I would do this only if there is full functionality. (All M4/3) If someone has first hand experience with this combination, you advice would be much appreciated. Thank you. JimR

The things you will NOT get are brand-proprietary code for correction of corner shading and distortion. Those are Jpeg related only. With a “clean” lens such as a macro, even your JPEGs will exhibit verrrry little of such flaws. If you were using a very wide lens or an ultra speed lens, then sticking with matching brands could matter.

I have numerous lenses and bodies of both brands and for most purposes I mix-and-match with no obvious visual problems for routine photography.

Before you purchase a Lumix version, I just wanted to make sure you are aware that Olympus (now OM Digital Solutions) produces a 30mm macro lens. Personally, I use the Oly 60mm f2.8 macro, which is a brilliant lens and can be readily purchased on the seconhand market.

Opposite camera brand to lens brand. I have several Lumix cameras and use both Panasonic and Olympus lenses. I use the Olympus 30mm Macro on my Lumix Panasonic G9 to photograph my paintings. I process images in PS CC. All my lenses are corrected with their profiles that are applied automatically by the processing software. Not an issue.

Is there some reason your looking at the LUMIX over the Olympus?
I’d stick with brand to brand for full functionality
I have the Olympus 30 it’s a little awesome lens

In-camera focus stacking may be one issue. My EM1 mark II for example only allows in-camera FS with specific Olympus lenses, like the 60mm macro and others. You can still focus bracket or manually stack. There are no other issues that i am aware of. I have numerous Olympus and Lumix lenses and find no other issues with them being used on either my Olys or Lumix cameras with full function.

I use Panasonic lenses with my Olympus bodies. Never an issue.

I use Sigma 19mm F2.8, 30mm F1.4, and Art 60mm F2.8 lenses on my Olympus and Panasonic Lumix cameras. If I want macro I slap my adapted 55mm Micro Nikkor on my OM-D 10.1, which has In-Body Stabilization. Extension tubes available if needed. AF not desired with macro shots for me - IBS: You Bet!.
~ All of these lenses are as sharp if not sharper as any "native" lenses (from trying other people's) and perform flawlessly!!

I have that lens. It is one of my favorites.

Its internal Optical Image Stabilizer works fine on Olympus bodies, but either turn off the Olympus IBIS, OR use Mega OIS on the lens without the Olympus IBIS.

Panny and Oly stabilization do not work in tandem. If you want Dual IS II, you need a Panasonic body and Panasonic lenses that support it. Otherwise, the lenses just work fine on both brands.

Of the three Micro 4/3 macro lenses, the 30mm is sharpest. The other two are quite good, though.

The 30mm is great for copy work, Lego animation, half- to full-length portraits, video interviews with two people... It’s not so great for macro work with wasps!

Thank you all, for your tips and suggestions. I was looking at the LUMIX 30mm Macro primarily because of aperture, aspherical, and number of glass elements compared to the Olympus 30mm Macro. What I want to do with it is copy work, specifically slides. I have already gotten a running start on copying my slides using the Olympus zoom lens and the Nikon ES-2, but I know the quality will be even better with a prime lens rather than the zoom. Knowing now that the compatibility is not an issue (with tips from burkphoto and others) I will go down to my local camera store, where hopefully I can try a hands on comparison, and even try out with the ES-2. Thank you again everyone! JimR

There is no differences between using the Olympus or the Panasonic 30mm macros other than the Panasonic may be the slightly sharper lens. There will be a new Olympus 100mm macro with IS (Olympus trys their best to eliminate the need for a tripod) possibly this year or very early next year. No idea how sharp it will be. But it is to be a part of the Pro series which usually is very sharp. We use the Olympus 30mm f2.8 macro at my work along with our Olympus TG-6s for all our macro work. Even the most novice users seem to find it easy enough to use and get acceptable results. Either of the Olympus or Panasonic lenses will work wonders in the hands of an experienced photographer, amateur or pro.

FWIW, I wouldn’t do it. Go for a used Oly instead. Although I haven’t researched that lens, on the other 6 lenses I own I also researched the Panasonic equivalents. The Oly lenses on the Oly cameras always came out with an edge. Worth checking out before you buy.
