Macbook question

I have a late 2013 Macbook Pro that is overheating. After researching online it appears to be a common problem due to the thermal paste going past it's sell by date. There are a number of how to vids on Youtube that make it look like a fairly easy procedure. What I would like to know is there any fellow senior hoggers who have attempted this repair and how easy was it? Thanks in advance and all the best!

I had a similar (or same) problem with my Mid 2010 MBP. It turned out to be the battery failing (and beginning to swell). It was overheating and the trackpad was bulging. Advice was to remove battery at once (and carefully as they can explode apparently). Removing the battery was very simple as was refitting the replacement. Watch the screws on the cover as they are not all the same length.

Same as happened to my 2015 model; in fact, got hot enough to burn the charging port. Ended up "manually" charging battery by placing a zip-lock bag with ice cubes above and below the charging port when ever it was plugged in. My model/year MBP had a battery recall... so new battery was free but, $350 to replace the charging port.

Years ago I wondered if I had a similar problem as I have an early 2013 MacBook Pro. The owner of a computer store said I first needed to blowout any internal dust before going any further.
You can use one of those canned sprays and after turning the Mac off, spray the cooling slots in case and see if you notice a lot of dust coming out.
Turns out he was right and I haven't had a heating issue since. He also told me the Mac is designed to use the case as a heat sink so don't get too excited if it feels warm/hot as that is why it's metal.

That sounds like a good idea. Thanks a lot. p.s. it's not a battery issue as other posts show as it has a brand new battery.

I thought Apple products were supposed to be superb, never had that problem with a Windows laptop. My advice is the only Apple product one should buy is a Granny Smith

One thing I've seen in several computer repair videos is removing the processor, cleaning the area, and adding new paste - something I have no intention of doing. I have an aluminum pad designed for thawing meat that I sometimes put under my laptop. You can also buy special pads to keep laptops cool. Get one of the programs listed below to keep track of processor temperature.

Lots of ideas -

I have a 2012 MacBook Pro and i replaced the hard drive/flash drive with a one Terabyte. While replacing it I cleaned all the dust out and removed the CPU and put new thermal paste before reinstalling everything. As said prior the screws for the case are different sizes so reinstall them accordingly. This was all done through the knowledge of you tube as I’ve never done this before and all turned out okay.

That's good to hear. What brand of hard drive did you go for?

I went with OWC. They included tools and step by step instructions. You’ve just have to make sure to get the right one for your machine. It seems apple used different formats in the same year so I had called them (OWC) with my serial number, year made and they provided the proper drive and connection adapter for mine.

Had a similar issue with my MacBook Pro a few years ago. Took it to the Apple Store to buy a new battery and was told that the battery was covered by warranty; got a new battery on the spot at no cost to me. Hope you are as fortunate.

I put a Samsung 500GB SSD in my 2012 MBP.
