I am looking to update my camera from Nikon D600 to Nikon Z5. I am looking for any input from actual Z5 owner or user. I have read numerous articles and reviews but looking for input from actual user to hear what you like dislike and would you wish was different and or should you have bought a different model and why. I have found
good information from reviews but have found if you don't use something on a regular basis that is where you learn the smaller issues with something new about the camera.

Thank you in advance

I purchased the Z5 on December 9th. Initially very pleased, the sale price, 24mp and dual card slots were factors. The Z5 will be a backup and secondary wedding shooter to my D750 once I've had the chance to become more familiar with it's low light autofocus. To answer your question, as a Nikon shooter you will be comfortable with the menu and handling, high ISO noise level as good as if not slightly better than the D750, auto focus in some ways better than the D750. When using larger lenses I prefer the size of my D750 or even D850, I prefer the size of the Z5 with the smaller primes. I am too heavily invested in F mount lenses, and retired, to switch to mirrorless completely. In my opinion the Z5 is an excellent value, performing well above its price. your decision really gets down to what needs would it answer for you. I'm very pleased with the Z5 and looking forward to using it. The link below is to a post I made with my first Z5 shots and several adapted lenses.

I have it and have been using it for the past few days.
Ergonomics are excellent, well-sized buttons and a very good grip, although it may be a bit short if you have larger hands.
Image Quality is excellent, dynamic range is good as well. The EVF has excellent resolution and is very bright.
The main downside is the high-speed shooting/burst rate which is a meager 4.5 fps, it is very slow. There is no top LCD panel, but the Info button makes up for that.
Auto-focus is very good but not at the same level as Canon and Sony.
See some pictures below taken with the camera.
Enjoy!

sergiohm, UncleBuck, Both of you thank you for the input this is the information I am looking for which truly help. I am going to use it to replace my current camera that I use for real estate photography and family fun. I have small hand so that is not an issue. I always leave my camera on burst mode but never look or need the speed. Thank you both for providing photos, all your photos are great and again what I am looking to make a decision.

One other question, I read in a recent post that the FTZ adapter is good but it does run into a few limitation. I also have a moderate number of Nikon mount lenses, from Sigma, Pro Tokina series and Nikon. Have either of you found any compatibility issues using the FTZ mount?

It is a very good camera but be aware that it only shoots 5 fps whereas the z6 shoots 12 fps. I love the camera for still shots.

Not quite the same, but I went from a D500 to a Z6, and love it. it is smaller, weighs less, has fantastic kit lenses (Zand I suspect the higher end ones are even better), and works well. The only downside to the Z6 and Z7 (original versions) were only one card slot; the D500 had two. The Z6-II and Z7-II also have two slots, but the Z5 always had.

I'd recommend comparing total cost, with lenses you want to get, between the Z5 and the new Z6-II; there is not that much of a difference.

Jeff

My z5 works with all AF-S and AF-P lenses when using the FTZ. All functions are also supported on my Tamron and Sigma lenses. The FTZ will not support auto focus on older AF-D lenses. While it is nice being able to use my existing lenses on both my z5 and z50, it is, to me anyway, 'clunky' feeling. It makes my nice, relatively compact 24-120 seems bulky. So much so that I bought a z24-70, which I love.

I think you need to look up each lens maker to see what is compatible.
I have found that all of my Nikon lenses are compatible, but my first generation Tamron 24-70 is not, but my G2 70-200 is compatible.
Nikon Rumors had links for many lenses and the Z cameras.

jeffhacker great points and the dual slot restriction on the Z6/7 was a big hold up on why I never switched earlier, I have grown use to the dual slot storage. Doing the comparison I do not see enough difference between the Z6ll to warrant the price difference. I like the information screen on the top but again not enough to justify the price. Finally burst mode I always leave it on low but never shoot any action shots that need high speed burst with that many frames per second.
shutterbob, ejpeters again good information. I have hard time finding Nikon links show what works and does not work. Overall goal is to slowly replace lenses as time goes on I would like my larger and more expensive lenses to just work at this time. But my concern was like you pointed out it just seems to distract from the smaller size which is a factor in switching. I have checked individual web pages and like my Tokina 17mm is not supported by Tokina and there is no compatibility information what so ever. That was a reason for the posting to get good information from user. Nikon continued to point to buying new lenses and since I have not bought the Z5 they give little to no information. Thank you all great info and I appreciate taking the time to respond.

My biggest problem is getting Photoshop to recognize the Z5 raw files, and yes i have the latest Camera Raw update.

letmedance UGH!!!!!!!!!! I never though about software issues, good point, I also use PS and several others. I do not need that headache. I do not do a lot of work for pay but when I get a call its because time is an issue and need photos with a quick turn around. I do most all my work in raw format to edit. Please keep me updated, for now it may be a show stopper for now or may be another reason to move away from LR/PS. I just hate changing everything at the same time. Thank you

My pics have come out near perfect in JPG, but I still like to tweak with camera raw, I hoping one of the members know the work around.

I rented the Z6II for two weeks recently. I liked the face and eye detection autofocus for studio photo shoots. I imagine that the Z5 has the same capabilities. I turned on "Show Focus Points" in Nikon View NX-i and did screen shots of my photos here.

Have you used one of the Nikon mirrorless cameras yet? It's a lot different and takes getting used to. If you haven't used one yet, I would recommend renting first. LensRentals.com is very good.

I've had no issues with Photoshop or LR and Z5 NEF files, have you tried opening the NEF file from LR? Z5 has had support a few versions back of Camera Raw.

Here is a link to Camera Raw Nikon support https://helpx.adobe.com/camera-raw/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html

Here is a NEF file I've successfully opened in Photoshop http://img.gg/nDVqu9O

Let me know if you can open it
