Just picked up a pair of iPhone 12 Pro Max (for my wife and I). Took a bike ride along the beach and captured a few late afternoon beach images with Catalina Island on the horizon. Dust from the Santa Ana winds created a very nice glow as the sun set. These images were captured as raw files with the Moment Camera app. This camera is noticeably better that the camera in my iPhone X. Still have some exploring to do with this device.

I do use this device 'much much' more for the camera, internet access and other apps than I do for communication. Most of the calls I get are junk and I don't answer. I keep it with me for those calls that I need to make or receive.

But I have to ask:
Why shoot raw files using the Moment camera app instead of using the raw file offered by your iPhone12ProMax (considering how Apple is braggin’ on the raw images coming out of the iPhone 12ProMax ??)

No reason other than I prefer Moment's app over the Apple's earlier camera app. I believe the ProRaw in the Moment app is the same as the ProRaw in Apple's app, but not positive. Also the Moment App let's you bracket you images in raw, saving all three images separately. I'm not sure that Apple does that yet. I'm still exploring the differences.

I have no experience with the Samsung's, but those that I know have them, love them. I assume that the camera technology is similar although Samsung may have a higher pixel count. They are direct competitors and both know that their camera is the primary driver of new phone sales.

As I am getting more familiar with my new iPhone12ProMax I am realizing you are right that several third-party raw camera apps have the native Apple cameras beat in several regards- particularly in permitting MANUAL CONTROL OF EXPOSURE! The Moment, LightroomMobil, Halide, 645, and PureShot apps all permit degrees of manual exposure control any experienced photographer would rightly expect to be able to exercise (and there are several other raw apps I’ve not yet tried).

As one whose goal is production of large prints (24”x36”, 36”x48” and larger) of high image quality, I am especially eager to reap the benefits of those 47% larger sensors with which the iPhone12ProMax is supplied. Capturing the maximal image data quality (highest possible S:N ratio and highest possible tonal spectrum) is predicated upon using the sensor’s total available raw-accessible DR which, in turn, requires full manual control of exposure !

Being more of a cyber-cretin than I’d like to be I find little about the Raw app user interfaces that is “intuitive”, so it takes me a while to get used to negotiating them. Ah well.... all good things in time, I suppose!

I’m sure you are enjoying gaining mastery of your your new iP12 as I am mine!
