I have posted this question on several printer specific forums with no answers. I will now post here where more members may see it.

I bought a refurbished Epson XP 960 from Epson back in November 2019 and it worked perfectly for two months when it suddenly started creasing photo paper causing the printer to jam. The paper is not shredded and is ejected by the printer by pressing the Cancel key on the printer. There is no issue with plain white paper. It prints perfectly. After conversing with Epson they sent me a new printer. Same thing again, two months later it started creasing photo paper. Epson sent me a third printer. Now exactly two months later this printer is doing the same thing. Any ideas? I have been printing since 2001 with HP and Epson printers and have never seen anything like this. Comments or suggestions appreciated.

Are you telling it "photo paper" as opposed to "plain paper"?

Bad printer design?

Is there a curl in the paper?

What brand/size/type/thickness of paper is associated with the issue?

No, paper not curled when placed in tray. When it "jams" there is a perfect crease down the middle of the paper or two creases, each 1/3 way from the paper ends.

This happens on all popular Red River and Epson letter sized glossy and matte papers.

Sounds like the transport rollers are not feeding equally, a mechanical thing.
Gummed or slippery rollers; roller moving (ever so slightly) on roller shaft.
Could even be a small hunk of paper caught in the feed system.

Yes, I specify type and size of paper.

Thanks for interest.

The techs I talked with at Epson were all pleasant but really knew little about printers. The computer generated email I received both times listed hardware failure as the culprit. It is just hard to believe the same thing could happen on three different printers. I have been unable to find any online discussion of this subject. The 960 was generally considered a very good printer.

None of those would apply to three successive printers.

I think if you are experiencing the same problem, while using Epson paper, on 3 separate new printers, I would choose a different model or return it and buy a Canon instead. There is clearly an issue with either this production run of this model or a support issue (or both), and I would have lost confidence in the product/support by now.

I would have to agree. Something went wrong on the production line. I've used the XP-960 for a number of years now, with different papers, and the printer handled all of them without a problem. I consider it the best printer I've had, starting around 1989.

Thanks all for the advice. Under warranty conditions I could have gotten a 4th but I have lost interest. The final straw came when Epson asked me after taking a survey if I would like a technician to call me. I answered yes but never heard a thing. I am now shopping and considering all brands including Canon. Deals and selection appear to be limited now.

For what it’s worth, I have an XP-960 and have been using it for about 3 years with no problems. It’s been a great printer. I have found it to be very accurate, versatile and easy to use.

I too have a XP-960 and print all sizes and types of paper. I've had absolutely no problems.

Are you using Heavy Photo paper by loading it from the Rear (Tray) which is where Epson suggests? I have had an XP-960 for over three years and have never had a sheet of photo paper jam or get wrinkled in the printer. As I understand the printer, only 20# bond paper should be loaded from the bottom tray. Try it, I have printed hundreds of 8.5 x 11 sheets out of mine.

Thanks. My understanding is the rear feeder is for 11 x 17 paper. The "owner's manual" clearly states that 8.5 x 11 photo paper is to be loaded from the front in the lower tray. I formerly had an Epson 837 which gave me over five years of no problem service. Thanks again.
