I downloaded Efex filters NIC from google when they were offering them free. I use elements for editing and that is where they are stored. When I edit with them, I am not able to save my work. Also, I recently tried to download the free trial from DX but could not open the collection. I tried reaching out for help but still could'nt open the trial. Although I am able to navigate my computer, the photographic software is another world! I am using a Macbook Pro.

Also if there is a simple program to use for B/W, I'd be happy to know about it.

Thank you all.

I use the Apple Photos, which is the Free program for editing on Apple OS. If you have an iPhone the Photos program is there too. There is also a very basic program on Windows in there Photo program. One thing many people don't realize is that if shoot in color and then Leave your photo in color and then use the PP programs like Apple Photos to convert to B&W you can use all the sliders like Highlights, shadows, saturation, hue and others besides the dedecated B&W sliders. Many PP programs are free or let you try them out for 30days. I also use ON1 and Capture 1 .

The NIK collection is intended to be used as plugins to other programs, such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Photoshop Elements, DXO, and Affinity. So, you must start out in the host application, then launch the NIK app of your choice from within the host. Once you finish with NIK, it returns you to the host and saves your work.

Thanks for your speedy reply. I do use Apple Photos and then want to use Nik for the B/W. I am able to do that but it does not have a save prompt when I have finished. Is it because I have done some editing in Photos first?

Paige, do you have PS Elements?

If yes, open a photo in Elements main workspace, go to the filter drop-down menu and click on Nik Silver Efex. Edit for b&w and then click OK to bring the edited photo back into the main workspace of Elements.

This is repeating what DWU2 suggested, but it's unclear whether you have attempted to access Nik from Elements. Thanks!

i use nik's free download unsupported . photos are downloaded in photos , and then exported to desktop as a tiff .
hold down control and the image and open whichever nik ap desired . after processing , i drag back to photos . i can also use photos for processing at any point . i then export the photo back to desktop as a maximum jpeg , and
drag back to photos and store as a jpeg . i delete the tiff . maybe this is more involved than necessary , but it works for me . nik is like working in a darkroom with being able to dodge and burn . silver efex works really well ;
lots of fun to use .

If you're on a Mac, then you also have Preview, which allows you to do a variety of editing, including sliding the Saturation button to the left to take it to B&W.

Thanks for your reply. I read your comments and I know that your advice is reliable!

I have adobe elements and that is where I have saved the nik filters. When I drop a photo into Elements, I can do all the processing but it doesn't save my work. So I guess I will have to buy the new collection at some point.
I will look up some things on u tube and see if there is anything else I can do.

You could try uninstalling/reinstalling NIK.

Lila, please use the "quote reply" button located underneath the comments to which you're replying. Otherwise, there is no way for us to know who you are speaking to.

It's still unclear to me what your process is. You open a photo in Elements, then access Nik via the filter section? Is that correct?

You apply black and white edits in Nik, then you click OK to return the photo to the Elements workspace? Is that correct?

You then click the SAVE button in Elements? If yes, what is the error message that prevents you from saving the edited file?
