Even with a 14mm lens, when I zoom in on the original, the stars are slightly smeared, not pinpoints. I try to stick with 25 seconds to minimize the trail. Thanks for looking!

I rarely exceed 25 sec with my 14mm lens either . There can be many reasons for your smeared stars. Not quite in focus, from focus creep, you can stop that by using tape. Lens flaws itself. Especially in the corners. Sometimes stopping down a few clicks can help. Camera shake, from the wind, from the shutter, from, mirror, from you tripping the shutter, from a very light weight tripod, a passing car. Many reasons for shake. Try using a self timer or remote timer. Be careful with your camera strap. Just the slightest wind can shake it.
