Canon 600mm f4 (old version,non-IS) on Canon RP

Hello All,
I’ve been wanting a 600mm since I sold my 500mm f4 IS. I’m on a limited budget, aren’t we all?, and want to spend less than $4k. I know you really need IS for these big lenses and that’s why I was thinking pairing it with a referb. RP or R as they have in camera IS. So, what do you all think? I know the old lens doesn’t have the new features, but I’d get the reach and IS, assuming it works as I believe. Sorry the post is so long just wanted to be clear.
THank you,
Tim

Just to clarify: neither the EOS RP nor the EOS R feature in-body image stabilization (IBIS). The first full-frame mirrorless EOS bodies with IBIS are the R5 and R6 bodies. You may have read about IBIS for the RP & R, but that feature exists only for video recording, not still photography.

Hi Tim, wondering what camera and lenses you already have? I can think of lots of ways to spend your 4k.

I would suggest there have been made thousands and thousands of (perhaps millions) of excellent images made with the first (non IS) version of this lens on bodies that did not have IBIS. Perhaps you are over speculating the benefits of this technology. I would suggest that if your shoot fast enough with good techniques you would be very happy with this lens. Just keep in mind; it's considerably heavier that later versions. When considering your budget, include the costs of a good tripod and gimbal head, you will need them to complete your setup.

Why not rent the new rf 600 f11 or rf 800 f11, these new lenses were made for us mere budget restricted mortals. I have 800 f11 on my R6 - nope is not a silver bullet...but the again it's very good given it's limitations. And you can hand hold it. yup I wish I could afford a 800 f4, but can't quite swing raiding the house remodeling fund...

I have the 5d2, 5d3, and 7d2 besides some rebels.
Another user just corrected me on the in body IS so, I guess I’ll have to just skip a few meals for awhile LOL. On the bright side I have all winter to shop.😁

Hi,
I guess I shouldn’t have suggested that everyone needs IS, but from experience, I know I do. Even on a monopod my tremors get the best of me. :)
Thank you

I have the RP, I don't think it will exceed the 5d3 in image quality. Maybe be similar. A 5d4 I would think is far superior to the RP.

For many of us, Canon enthusiast, the Eos-R/RP wasn't quite enough of a jump for us make the leap from our 5d3s and d4s. But the r6/r5 is another story...I'm on a r6 will will probably add the r5 in a few years from the canon refurbish store.

But if is is just starting out the EOS RP is quiote compelling especially at it's current selling prices, add the RF STM lenses and it's quite the gateway....

LOL maybe 25 years ago. I used my 500 f4 on a monopod with a gimbal head. I really liked that setup.
