Letting Lightroom 6 Go

I've been using Lightroom 6 since early 2016, proud of my son for finagling Adobe to allow us to reinstall it on my new laptop about a year ago, but although I've really had no problems with 6 & feel great about it, today I believe I learned that I need Classic or CC, either of the subscription services, in order to merge together a stack of images. I tried my D850's Focus Shift this afternoon, pleased with results, but of course not seeing the final results yet. I'm guessing that once I use one of the two subscription services, I'll find there are other good reasons to be spending more money, too. Is anyone else still using Lightroom 6, or am I a real dinosaur? Part of me kind of hates to let it go. Why give up on a good product, unless there's more to gain by new?

Bruce, I have LR6 and PS6 but also a D800. If I went to a D850 I would need to upgrade

Yeah, I learn...what I should spend...as I go. After my Pentax, used D60 for four or five years, then, fortunately as it turned out, fell on my face into a river with it in hand. My D7100 I still have & use. D850 is markedly better in low light, plus the other features. I can't help the ambition I feel. D850 cost & costs. I may never be great at using either camera, but it's so much fun.

Just do it. It is a month-to-month commitment that you can suspend and resume. Best decision I made was to subscribe. It’s always up to date, provided you keep your computer OS and hardware fairly current.

$10/month is less than a decent bottle of wine, or a haircut, or a couple of Starbucks lattes, or a fast food meal at some restaurants.

I happily use LR6 and won't change until I change to a camera that isn't supported for RAW, not something I plan to do in the next 12-months. You might look at focus stacking software, something likely to be cheaper than a $120 / yr ongoing subscription for just the one feature.

You do realize that LR never has done focus stacking. But it will allow you use the Edit In->Photoshop to send your component images to Photoshop as layers, where you can merge them into a focus stack. But if I remember correctly, LR 6 let you do that.

But, there is nothing wrong with getting your software up to date, and you'll just love the performance and functional enhancements in both programs. Yes, there is good reason to keep your software current, and no value in holding on to old outdated and orphaned software.

Does Nikon support the focus stacking in their free software? I know Canon does in their free software.

But you will probably fall in love with many of the new features, especially Photoshop.

I updated to LR 6, buying one of the last copies B&H had left. It serves me well and I have no need to move to a subscription format, which I do not like. I also use Luminar as a plug-in. I’m happy where I am.

Have been using LR6.1 as primary PP vehicle for several years and find it quite productive for me. I shoot Fuji X-T2 and XT-30 in jpeg and use Fuji's film simulations so I don't need that from Adobe. I'm also averse to Adobe's subscription policies (just another guy on my payroll). You decide what's best for you.

I have the LightRoom 6.14 which is the last upgrade you could get before it went to the online version. I refuse to be sucked into having my credit card charged monthly & started shopping. ACDSee has virtually the same product, much easier to learn, & a 1 time fee. I'm not trying to trash Adobe products, but I refuse to pay a monthly "subscription fee".

I have 5 on one Mac and 6 on another. I tried the subscription route but after one year I preferred my own deal.

Just a question for those who don't want to join the subscription model...If you are happy with what you currently have just stay with it. But you may want to ask yourself how many features and new embellishments are you willing do to without and for how long? Pardon me for saying but I'm getting tired of the arguing over subscription vs one time payments musings....If you're happy with your current situation great and just go with it and enjoy it. Life is not always what we deem to be individually fair but we are dealt the hand we have or we make our own bed and have to live in it.....Wednesday morning rant over ....;-) take care all....

Hi Brucer,
I've been using the focus stacking feature in Elements + ($12.00 one-time charge) along with PSE 15 for the past year after dropping the Adobe subscription. It has served my needs just fine using a D7200 and a D750 but I have no knowledge about using the programs on a D850 file(s) though I don't think it would make any difference. Take care & ...

I have 3 newspapers, snowplowing, and many TV choices by subscription.

I think I'd give up anything else on my subscription list, list before I gave up Creative Cloud.
